The British encountered many communities in the Pacific in the late 18th century; this paper will focus on the encounters with Aborigines and Maoris as they both represent strong instances of opposition between two laws and conceptions of the world. Based on these colonial encounters we learn that for the British, property rights were closely linked to the notion of civilization therefore communities with a system of agriculture stood the best chance of having their property rights recognized.
