Ah the smell of the sea, the fresh breezes, walks on the sands, kicking the surf with your bare feet. Just to be "beside the seaside beside the sea" is enough to lift the most jaded of spirits. Watching the yachts unfurl their sails, pull them in and turn into a broad reach to scut across the bay is a beautiful sight to see.
The idea of creating power without using energy is not a new one. Before engines were invented sails were king and the great sailing barges were hauled down to the sea and their great sails pulled up ready to sail the ocean.
Pulling on the clothesline to make it taut was a weekly task. Mainly to ensure that when fully loaded with the family wash it was totally secure and could not fly away. The image of clothes flapping in the breeze is a familiar one although, like the great ships, completely dependent on the weather. The use of the outdoor clothesline rapidly drops when winter nights are drawing in and the sun becomes weaker.
It is then that the indoor washing airer becomes an essential part of the laundry cycle. In the past we dragged the old wooden clotheshorse out of the cupboard to take pride of place in the sitting room. In cramped apartments this caused a sharp reduction in living space and acute embarrassment when visitors unexpectedly called. Thank goodness today there are other practical choices available in the wall mounted drying rack, whose arm folds outwards from the wall to hold a sliding expanding rack. This is a permanent centre for drying clothes and folds away after use.
It is really useful when installed in double or even triple formations, either side by side using the unused space up near the ceiling, or in stacked formation one above the other, for as high as the ceiling will allow.
Combined with washing lines both indoor and outdoor and perhaps a floor mounted airer for ultimate portability it is easy to move into a natural drying cycle where clothes etc are dried naturally and at their own pace. Not forced to dry and over dry by the modern tumble drier.
Dinghy sailing today is entirely energy free and silent. Similarly airers give years of energy free pleasure and the clothesline will be ready for action whenever needed.
