Stove-Top Coffee Makers

One of the oldest types of coffee makers is the percolator. The ground coffee is placed in a ‘basket' at the top and the water at the bottom of a pitcher-type pot. Once the water boils, it is forced through a tube where it runs over into the coffee grounds and the liquid returns to the bottom. The liquid can run through the coffee grounds over and over, making the coffee stronger with each pass. A percolator usually has a glass dome on top so you can see how dark the coffee is. This type is advisable for a person who wants to have the luxury of choosing how strong the coffee is and has the time to wait for the water to boil.

Another type of coffee maker is the French Press which is designed for stove top use wherein you press the coffee grounds into the boiling water for a richer, darker taste. If you are a person who doesn't mind waiting for the water to boil along with the physical exertion of pressing on the coffee grounds, then this type of coffee maker is for you.

Electric Coffee Makers

The standard drip coffee maker is an. The water is placed in a chamber above the coffee grounds, heated and then dripped down through the grounds. The water then drips into a carafe below. The water only passes through the grounds once, and the strength of the coffee depends on the amount of grounds placed in the ‘basket.' With capacities ranging from 4 to 12 cups, regular drip coffee makers are considered the most economical. There are models with timers so all you have to do is set everything up and the coffee will start without you.

For the discriminating coffee aficionado with the money to spare, an espresso maker provides the ultimate coffee experience. The espresso maker is one of the higher–priced coffee machines, but with one, you can brew espresso, cappuccino, and even lattes. Many models will even brew regular coffee, but brewing specialty coffees is what this appliance is designed for. Espresso makers can be pump driven or of the pod drip type and if you are going for one of these, make sure that the machine has a frother (for steaming milk).

Whether you are a regular coffee drinker or have that discriminating taste when it comes to your grounds, any of the coffee machines mentioned would surely take care of your coffee needs.
