Drinking Water Quality - Are You Whistling Past the Graveyard?

Reality check:
Drinking water quality is a hot topic at the moment and for good reason. "US drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer." - Ralph Nader Research Institute.

That is quite a statement but lets see how all those substances get there. It is easy to blame industry and farm runoff. Pesticides and herbicides from farm land runoff is certainly a contributing factor, and so are the chemicals industry use, which end up in drains and belch into the atmosphere. However, it is the general population which is responsible for the majority of contaminants found in water. Gasoline, lawn chemicals and cleaning products used improperly or excessively are the worst offenders.

An example:
A while ago I wanted to get rid of mold that was discoloring my tiled roof. I bought a cleaning agent from the hardware store and went to work--sprayed it on--washed it off and it looked pretty good. When I had a closer look at the contents of that agent, I was surprised to find out that the main agent was a known carcinogen ie cancer-causing.

From the roof, down the gutter, into the storm water pipes, into the creek, the river and out to sea and out of sight. Maybe, but also adding to the totality of chemicals in our eco system. Fish take it in; it ends up in the clouds and comes back as rain. Groundwater is polluted and this ends up on farm fields and so it goes.

Water treatment:
The methods that Municipalities use to make the water 'safe' for human consumption are just not up to handling the toxins now found in the water. Sure, they can remove the 'floaties' with sand traps and kill off organisms with chlorine but this falls way short of taking out the cancer forming chemicals that are surely there. It may be ignorance but is more likely be one of economics--Chlorine is cheap. Also consider the build-up in the pipes that carry water from the treatment plants to your house as well as the lead contained in the pipe joints in your house.

Whistling past the graveyard:
That is a saying which indicates what someone does when there is danger and continues as if nothing is the matter. Well, something definitely is the matter and until such time as the authorities change the filtration methods, we will either have to wear it or do something ourselves if we are to have good, clean, healthy water to drink and shower in.

Choices:
Home water filtration is the answer if you wish to improve your house-water quality. There are many to choose from. What you want is one that removes the harmful toxins while leaving in beneficial minerals such as calcium and magnesium and which is reasonably priced and improves taste.

Also look for a company that supplies shower filters. After all, the skin absorbs chlorine and other chemicals that are not good for your health. Here is a chart which compares a variety of better known brands. It will help you to decide one will give you the best drinking water quality.
