Have Children, Will Drive

Posted: Oct 13, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

It is one of the greatest universal truths that everyone overestimates his or her own driving skills. For some reason, no one will admit to being a poor driver, despite evidence to the contrary. Every accident is always the other guy's fault; no one wants to think of his or her own driving skills as less than sterling.

But this inflated sense of skill becomes a bigger problem when you're driving not only yourself, but also your children. Infants are particularly fragile; any sudden twist or turn of your vehicle could give them whiplash or similar injuries. Accidents, even the slightest ones, can have serious consequences on their tiny, fragile frames.

Even adults get shaken up in road mishaps; what more young infants?

Here are a few tips for keeping your infants safe while you drive:

  1. Get a car seat. Infant car seats are very important. As mentioned earlier, the slightest movement that adults will find normal in driving can actually have repercussions on infants' health. Infants are not developed enough to withstand sudden movements and curves, so infant car seats are very important in keeping them snug. These infant car seats should be perfectly snug and comfortable, so as to prevent sudden movements from jerking your child around. Infant car seats will help prevent injuries like whiplash and spinal damage.
  2. Avoid speeding. It seems like a no-brainer, but a lot of people tend to forget that they have a tiny person in the backseat. It's natural to want to drive faster when you have a lot of errands to run and not a lot of time to do so, but be vigilant and be aware of the fragile child in your backseat at all times.
  3. Keep things out of your child's reach. Some babies and children are very fond of throwing things around to amuse themselves. This could be a distraction while you drive, so do keep small objects out of their reach. This is a tip that would work even when you're not driving, as this prevents your infants and children from accidentally swallowing small objects.
  4. Infant car seats should be facing the rear. There are two things you need to remember about using infant car seats: first, that they be placed in the backseat and never the passenger the side of your car; and second, that they be facing the rear rather than the front. This is a much safer position, especially for infants. Toddlers can sit facing front, but be sure to check your child's size and weight before making the switch.

Take note of airbags. This is the reason why younger children are placed in the backseat. Airbags are designed for safety, but they can suffocate young children easily. Be wary of this particular feature, and take note of its location and position when deployed. This is to make sure that you don't place your infant in a position where an accidental airbag deployment can cause damage and suffocation.
