How To Store Bulk Supplies

Posted: May 23, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Large numbers of Americans purchase huge amounts of bulk items on a regular basis. In some parts of the country where severe weather can cause power outages and treacherous traveling conditions, stocking up on bulk goods is a necessity. For most, however, it's just a smart way to save time, gas, and money on both food and non-food items. A common question when considering bulk purchases is, "where will we put it?" Here are a few ideas on how and where to store your bulk goods.

If at all possible store the items in the same general area where they will be used. For example, diapers should be in close proximity to the baby's room and toilet paper near the bathrooms. Some large packages may need to be divided up and distributed to the various places where they will be used. This may be easier said than done however, which is when it's time to get creative.

When looking for new storage areas, leave no stone unturned. Check each room for where there may be wasted space. Get rid of any clutter to make room for the practical stuff. Guest bedrooms, spare bathrooms, coat closets, linen closets, under the stairs, and beneath the kitchen sink are all possibilities.

Think about using the space under the bed for storing paper products and non-perishable food. Under the bed storage boxes and zippered plastic bags will also make them more accessible. Using all available vertical space and stacking your bulk items in closets and on top shelves is another solution. For homes severely lacking in kitchen cabinet space, consider storing canned goods on their sides under a bed. Roll them out from left to right and keep an inventory of what you use.

Storing bulk goods in the living room or family room is also a possibility. Flat-topped chests used as coffee tables and storage ottomans are some of today's most practical answers to the question of where to put what. Another idea is to store large quantities of items in the boxes they came in, cover them with fabric and disguise them as end tables. This may sound extreme, but for small spaces, it works!

The garage and laundry room are also naturals when it comes to looking for hidden storage areas. Utilize shelving units and stack essentials like laundry detergent, paper goods, light bulbs, trash bags, and bottled water up to the rafters. When storing things in the garage, be aware of the temperature range and keep anything that could be damaged by extreme changes inside.

Empty coolers are another great place to stash non-foods and non-perishable items until you need them. Coolers are also a clever place to hide snack food such as chips and cookies from hungry kids!

If you have the space, either inside your home or in the garage for an extra refrigerator or freezer, they are essential for those who like to stock up on perishable foods like milk, frozen meat and vegetables.

A few more tips for bulk storage are:

  • Label and keep track of what you have so nothing will go to waste.
  • Store similar items together to streamline your inventory control process.
  • Whenever you buy extra containers for storage, make sure they are square or rectangular for easy stacking and stowing.
