Save Money on Utility Bills With This Simple Home Heating Checklist

Although you can't regulate the rates, you can take steps to keep costs at a minimum. Here is a simple home heating checklist to be sure your home is running at maximum efficiency. -Is your heating system more than 15 years old? If so, consider replacing it with a more modern energy efficient unit.

-On sunny days keep your curtains open to let in the sunlight. You would be surprised at how much warmth this can provide.

-Turn down the thermostat to 65 degrees, especially when you're away at work or in bed at night. A thermostat that allows you to program it is a great option here.

-Be sure your furnace ductwork is properly sealed and not leaking. Over the years, leaks can easily pop up.

-Turn on ceiling fans to the low setting to help in circulating the warm air that rises, down to the floor level.

-Seal your windows with film during winter months to keep cold air out.

-Be sure there is nothing blocking your registers or air vents.

-Keep the damper closed on your fireplace when you aren't using it.

-Seal up the areas around doors and windows that is letting in the cold air. This in, itself, can have a dramatic effect on home heating costs.

-Do you use a boiler for winter heating? If so, make sure the pipes are well insulated.

-Have a heating and cooling technician come out at least every 2 years to check over your furnace and complete heating system.
