Top Five Safety Tips for Travelling with Children

Posted: Oct 13, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

As a busy parent, it's inevitable that you'll have to drive with your infant or child sitting in the backseat. Travel is a very important part of adult life, and it's impossible to think that you'll be able to do so without your children tagging along at some point.

Given the dangers of driving, certainly a lot of parents want to keep their children as safe as possible. It's not exactly easy to keep such fragile bodies safe from every swerve and sudden stop, but there are ways to keep your children safe and sound even as you travel in a moving vehicle.

To help you protect your loved ones and still get to your destination with your nerves intact, here are the top five safety tips to remember when travelling with children. Make sure you remember them, and practice them wisely:

  1. Never drive with a child in your lap. Some people assume that having the child in their lap is equivalent to adequate protection. Even if you're not driving and you're sitting in the backseat, you still won't be able to protect your child properly with just your body. It's worse when you're driving; you're obviously distracted and you'll only put your and your child's life in danger. Take note that the damages to your child's body can come not only from a serious car crash; even the slightest swerves can cause whiplash and other neck injuries.
  2. Get your child the correct size of car seat. Infant car seats are particularly important, since infants are the most fragile and they won't be able to withstand every sudden stop or turn. Their necks, in particular, require significant support to ensure that no damage will occur. In choosing an infant car seat, make sure that you pick the correct size and keep it snug enough to protect your child's fragile frame. Your infant car seat must be both safe and comfortable.
  3. Don't rely on the adult seatbelt. Whereas infant car seats are best for babies, bigger children can use booster seats to help them use the adult seatbelt without problems. However, until your child reaches this specific size or frame, do not use the adult seatbelt on your child as this could lead to further injuries, like choking.
  4. Install your car seat correctly. Car seat installation can be quite tricky, as this is still a contraption you're trying to work with. A lot of injuries suffered by infants and children while in a moving vehicle are actually caused by incorrectly installed car seats. Also, take note of the proper direction of your car seat.  Infant car seats are often times designed to face the rear, as this offers better protection for your child. This is a very important part of the installation process; so do take note of the instructions.
  5. Beware of airbags. Airbags are designed for safety, but they can actually be hazardous to your child's safety. Make sure that you know where the airbags are, and keep your child away from that area. Infants, in particular, could suffer serious damages from the sudden deployment of airbags. They could be suffocated, or suffer fractures. This is also one reason why infants are often seated in rear-facing car seats.

Keep these tips in mind and you'll be sure to have a great time travelling with your children.
