Posted: Jan 05, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

If you are looking for a suitable acne skin care product, the amount of choices

available can make this task overwhelming. How do you know which acne skin care

product will work best for you? In situations such as this, it is best to learn

all you can about acne and acne skin care products. This will assist you in

making an informed decision. If this also sounds overwhelming, don't worry.

Doing your homework on acne can be broken down into five steps.

Step 1: Learn everything you can about the basics of acne. This includes reading

up on what causes acne, who gets acne, where acne is most likely to appear on

your body, and when you are most likely to suffer from acne. Some of this

information may surprise you. For instance, you will learn that foods such as

chocolate, nuts, or french fries do not cause acne changes in your hormones

do. You will also learn that acne is hereditary. This means if one or both your

parents were (or are) prone to acne, you will be too. If one or both parents use

an acne skin care product to treat their own acne, this acne skin care product

may work well for you also.

Step 2: Learn everything about the different types of acne. Familiarize yourself

with terms such as blackhead, whitehead, open and closed comedones, papules,

pustules, nodules, and hyper pigmentation. Not only is this educational, it can

help you determine if your acne is mild, medium, or severe. If you know what

type of acne you have, you will have a better idea of which acne skin care

product will be most effective.

Step 3: Learn everything you can about the various home remedies for acne. No

matter which acne skin care product you decide to use, you will still need to

implement a self-care regimen meant to prevent and treat flare-ups and

outbreaks. These home remedies include the proper washing of the face, keeping

your hands and hair away from your face, and avoiding tight-fitting clothes and

hats.

Step 4: Learn everything you can about over-the-counter (OTC) acne skin care

products. They come in different forms, such as lotions, medicated moisturizers,

medicated pads, gels, and creams. Every acne skin care product will contain an

ingredient that treats acne. These ingredients include benzoyl peroxide,

salicylic acid, and sulfur, and they all work a bit differently. These

ingredients are available in different concentrations, such as 2.5%, 5%, and

10%.

Step 5: Learn everything you can about how dermatologists treat acne. You may

decide your acne is too severe to be effectively treated by an over-the-counter

acne skin care product, and that you would prefer to have a doctor prescribe an

acne skin care product instead. Dermatologists treat many different types of

skin disorders and diseases, including acne. You might find it helpful to learn

about the types of acne medications a dermatologist is likely to prescribe.

These medications might contain a type of antibiotic, or they might contain

something called a retinoid.

If you take time to become an informed consumer, you increase your chances of

finding an acne skin care product most right for you. Becoming educated about

acne may also help you feel more in control when it comes time to choose an acne

skin care product and discuss your options with your doctor.
