You must have heard your mother saying that acne is triggered by hormones; she has learned it from her mother. The link between acne and hormones is well established now and there aren’t any people who don’t know about it. However, do you know how and where this link lies?

Acne can occur to you at any given point of time; during your childhood, puberty, adulthood or even at an old age. At all these stages, the hormones do fiddle with our system which leads to the development of pimples and acne on the skin. For most acne sufferers, it is very scary to have yet another eruption.

Hormones affect acne in various ways and the result is that not only adults or adolescents, but even babies develop these nasty pimples. Acne occurring in babies is due to the transfer of the maternal hormones through the mother’s placenta that further stimulates the secretion of sebum in the baby’s skin.

Have you seen children developing acne? Yes, ace is seen in children as well, tough not prevalent. Girls are worst affected than the boys and the process of acne breakouts continue as they become adolescents. Acne plays havoc during puberty and you hardly find a couple of teens who have not been affected by acne. They are God’s favorite child!!

As the hormonal changes are at its best during puberty, acne also is frequently seen in this age group. Teens develop acne, pimples and scars that actually hit their self-confidence and compel them to stay indoors.

Although the references to the hormonal activities and acne are often heard of, the layman fails to understand where the confusion is. According to the common man, males have a particular hormone which is testosterone and females have two basic hormones estrogen and progesterone. However, the fact is that both males and females have a combination of these hormones and when the level of hormones present in the body tends to fluctuate due to various factors, it causes different complications that manifest in the form of skin problems or other such health factors.

Testosterone is the main hormone responsible for the development of acne. When the testosterone levels are very high, the sebaceous glands tend to secrete excessive sebum (oil), which leads to the development of acne. This is a fact!!

But testosterone is a make hormone (according to common man). So, why is acne more prevalent in woman when the male hormone is responsible for the condition? Well, that’s because all the hormones are present in the human body and an increased level of testosterone leads to the acne eruption.

Acne and hormones are best friends and they would remain the same. All you can do is take good care of your skin and try to treat acne naturally.
