Adult Acne Care

Teens are not the only ones to get acne, it can strike adults up to their 30’s. Some causes of adult acne can be stress, use of bad cosmetics which can clog the pores and change of hormones which will increase production of oil on the skin.

Blackheads are the beginning stages of acne; it is caused by oil, dead skin cells and bacteria being trapped in the pore. Being exposed to air causes it to turn black. Pimples that are red are blackheads that have become inflamed. Being infected causes the pimple to develop a whitehead which is a puss like formation. Remember to keep your hands away from your face so you do not spread any bacteria and do not squeeze the pimples.

Take care of your skin to prevent the acne from getting worse, wash twice a day with a product that has benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. You can also exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week with a product that has salicylic acid. When washing do not scrub too hard, you do not want to cause more inflammation. You might also want to try an exfoliant with alpha-hydroxy acids. If you want to use cosmetics find those that are oil free and do not cause acne.

If you have waited too long to stop the breakouts and it gets worse, it would be time to see a dermatologist. If you do not take care of the problem you may get scarring. The dermatologist may prescribe medication according to your skin type and condition that is stronger than over the counter products. Retinoids, antibiotics, azelaic acid and birth control pills are some of the possibilities. Do not expect any treatment to work overnight, it can take up to 8 weeks to make improvements.
