Cardiac arrest is not a condition you want to mess with it can in fact happen quite suddenly and without warning. Many people confuse heart attacks with cardiac arrest, but they aren't the same thing. While someone having a heart attack is suffering damage to the heart muscle, usually because of a blockage of the blood flow to the heart, when someone suffers cardiac arrest, the heart completely stops working. For this reason cardiac arrest requires immediate medical attention or ends in death in just minutes. The following are some signs of cardiac arrest, although this can also occur without any prior symptoms.

It's important to realize that cardiac arrest can happen to people with or without signs or symptoms, but certain factors make them more likely candidates. People who are obese or suffer from diabetes are at a greater risk of cardiac arrest and other heart problems. Recreational drug usage leads to irregularities in the heart which may cause cardiac arrest. Recreational drug overdoses are the primary culprit in the cardiac arrest that is listed as the reason for many celebrity deaths.

The fact that cardiac arrest happens so quickly is one of the deadliest things about it. At times, paying attention to the warning signs can actually help you save a life. Someone who is having symptoms such as shortness of breath or heart palpitations, especially if there is any history of heart problems, should be considered at risk for cardiac arrest. While these symptoms are not absolute signs of cardiac arrest they should not easily be dismissed as symptoms either. Quick response increases the odds of surviving cardiac arrest exponentially. Therefore, if you aren't certain if someone is showing possible signs of cardiac arrest, it's better to be safe and call an ambulance, as this could be the difference between life and death.

Many times, a family history of cardiac arrest is the only risk factor people will have. If a family member has had a heart attack or some other heart disease or defect, your risk of going into cardiac arrest are greater. This doesn't mean you will necessarily have this happen, as you can take many steps to protect your health, but it does mean you should have a doctor check your heart regularly for warning signs if people in your family have had heart troubles. Your doctor may even be able to prescribe medications that will lower your risk.

Despite major advances in the medical field, cardiac arrest remains a major threat that can ultimately lead to death. While there are sometimes signs that can be observed, and there are risk factors that make it more likely, in some cases someone simply becomes unconscious with no warning signs or symptoms. The one sure sign of cardiac arrest is that the person's heart has stopped beating, which is why stimulation of some kind must be applied immediately. The signs above may help you identify cardiac arrest when it is happen or predict when it is a possibility.
