Effective Acne Treatment - Why Washing Can Make Acne Worse

Is it possible that washing the face isn't an effective acne treatment, and can actually make it worse?

I remember when I used to have acne that I used to believe that it was a sign of poor personal hygiene. I though that people would take one look at my acne riddled face and think that I didn't wash or something, especially as my acne stayed with me after my teens.

It was only when doing some research of my own that I discovered that I had actually been making the problem worse all along, just by washing too often. Anyone who has suffered with acne to a severe degree will know how greasy and oily the skin can get, and it is natural to think washing it away would be an effective acne treatment. Unfortunately, it isn't. Why?

Because the more you wash your face, the faster your skin will produce more oil!

The reason we get acne is because the skin is producing too much sebum, and this provides a good habitat for bacteria to develop and flourish. These bacteria irritate the skin and clog up the pores, causing acne and blackheads to appear.

The thing is, the skin actually needs some of this sebum to remain healthy. Constantly washing it away is equally as unhealthy for the skin as having too much sebum present. Not only that, but when you do wash too often, the body will respond by actually producing more sebum faster than before. This will obviously make the problem worse, and is not an effective acne treatment.

A good balance to help maintain healthy levels of sebum, whilst trying to control acne, is to wash twice a day with a mild, natural soap or face-wash. Once you get this simple skin care balance right, you will give yourself a chance of actually getting rid of acne for good.
