The very first step toward helping your teen is to provide emotional support. Be understanding in order to comprehend the emotional setbacks he or she faces due to the breakout of acne. Be sympathetic and help your teen in getting rid of the bad habits that can cause acne. Obviously, your teen may feel embarrassed, which can result in low self-esteem. The best you can do as a parent is to guide your teen in avoiding all of the bad eating habits that can worsen this condition.
Politely try to explain the reasoning behind every aspect of the changes you introduce to your teen’s lifestyle. This way, you are educating your teen about what is good for him or her. Ask your teen to keep both hands away from the face and never scratch pimples, as this can cause scars on the affected area. Make sure that your approach is gentle rather than forceful.
Hygiene is an integral part of living a healthy lifestyle. Ask your teen to wash his or her face at least twice a day. Make sure that your teen’s hair doesn’t fall over the forehead, and encourage a hairstyle which is easily managed. The shampoos your teen uses are also very important. Always buy mild shampoos and promote washing every day. If your teen’s hair is silky and tends to fall on or around the face, then get a hair band that will help to keep hair off of the face.
Nutrition and diet play a major role in keeping your body free from any harmful products. Consumption of oily foods can be a cause of acne formation, so try to avoid greasy stuff. Encourage the intake of water, as it cleanses the body of toxins. Most teenagers love to eat junk foods like burgers, pizzas, or French fries. Indeed, it can be hard to shift a teen’s diet to more nutritious options, but you need to plan a healthy regimen. Help him or her to understand the consequences of junk foods so that the shift can be willingly made to healthier options. Always introduce portions of salad into your family’s meals and educate them about the benefits of eating fresh green vegetables and fruits.
Ask your teen to avoid any kind of makeup on the affected area, as this can aggravate the condition of acne. If makeup is applied, then just make it a point to never leave it on while sleeping. Cleanse the face properly so that every bit of makeup is washed off of the skin. In addition, always wash the face before going to bed and apply an oil-free moisturizer.
Hopefully, the above information will help in the fight against acne formation. If the condition worsens, it’s advisable to take your teen to a dermatologist.
