Natural Acne Skin Treatments - Throw out the chemical concoctions!
It is often said that you shouldn't put anything on your skin that you wouldn't put in your mouth. Today, an increasing number of acne sufferers are heeding that advice and rejecting the harsh chemical concoctions sold over the counter and looking for a more natural acne remedy. The trouble with turning to natural remedies is knowing where to start, what works and what will have adverse affects. So here it is....
Flaxseed, taken internally, is one of the most highly natural remedies for acne. It encourages the body to produce less acne-causing oils and helps the skin to retain good moisture - so less oil sitting on top of the skin causing acne, but more moisture in the skin - making your skin look healthier and more radiant. Flaxseed is an essential fatty acid, and works to encourage clear skin by balancing hormone levels, which is a common reason for acne prone skin - especially with adult-acne sufferers. Excess oil produced by the body is a common cause for acne. This oil is produced by the sebaceous glands. Eating flaxseeds can reduce the sebaceous glands, limiting the amount of oil that is produced.
An advantage of flaxseed oil is that it doesn't dry the skin out like many skin treatments. In fact it reduces the inflammation that comes with acne problems and helps the skin to retain its moisture - without the excess oil. Flaxseed also has a healing property that rebuilds scarred skin that results from acne problems.
Flaxseed is used in alot of the "natural" acne treatments sold in health stores, which can be a very good option when avoiding the chemical based treatments. Otherwise, you may want to simply add flaxseed to your diet - either by grinding the seeds and adding them to your favorite recipes, or by sprinkling some over your meal. A warning though: don't take too much flaxseed as too much can have adverse affects such as stomach cramps.
Another interesting natural treatment for promoting clear and healthy skin is nettle or Urtica. This is similar to the stinging nettle you may stumble upon in the forest. Nettle has been used for years as a food to build immunity and promote general good-health, and only more
recently for fighting acne. Nettle has a natural anti-inflammatory property, ironically aleviating the skin irritation and bringing forward the healing process. First you boil the nettle, then drink the broth or eat the nettles. You may want to blend them first, or add them to a fruit smoothie to cover the taste.
As well as alieviating the inflammation of acne, nettles work to flush the toxins from your body. You can purchase nettle in a pill form, but I prefer making a herbal tea or smoothie from the real deal.
Rose water and lemon juice is a good natural acne treatment - this time used as an application directly to the skin (although you could probably benefit from drinking it as well). Lemon contains natural astringent properties, and both lemon juice and rose water have an antibacterial affect. Rose water is often used in cleansing products as it has a natural skin toning affect.
To use lemon and rose water, simply combine equal parts and put it directly onto affected areas of your skin using a cloth or cotton wool. Leave for quarter of an hour then rinse with warm water. An important thing to keep in mind when using natural remedies is to listen to your body. Often, especially when using something acidic like lemon, you may experience a slight stinging (after all acne is a strong irritation to your skin). If however, the irritation increases, it's good to discontinue using that method until you can ask a doctor or skin specialist if you have some type of allergy or unexpected reaction.
