Maybe your one of those adults who carries severe acne into adulthood. Being a teen or an adult with Acne can be hard, but there is help available. Acne Vulgaris, commonly referred to as acne, affects almost 17 million people in the US alone. This common skin condition shows up as different types of bumps on the skin. They include Whiteheads, Blackheads, Pimples, and bumps that are filled with pus called Pustules and the in the most severe cases you will get Nodules and Cysts. It most commonly appears on the face, neck, shoulders, upper back, and chest. Teens and kids get acne because of the hormone changes that come while developing through puberty. As your body begins to develop, these hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum, and the glands can become overactive. When there is too much sebum, that oil clogs the pores and leads to acne.
So what causes Acne Breakouts? Well there are several myths we should address first. It is important to understand that Acne breakouts are not caused by lack of cleanliness or your not washing enough. Actually just the opposite, washing to much can make your breakouts worse. It is also not caused by chocolates or to much greasy fast food. There are several factors that play a role when it comes to developing Acne. Acne forms when a pore or follicle opening becomes clogged with either dirt, dead skin cells or some other obstruction. Hair follicles cover virtually every part of our skin except for the palms of our hands and soles of our feet. Inside the follicle, the hair extends up from the deep layers of the skin and comes out of a pore. This plug causes a backup of Sebum oil produced by the Sebaceous Gland to lubricate the hair. This plug can be seen on the surface of the skin as either a exposed Blackhead or or sealed Whitehead. As this build-up grows, the area around the pore becomes red and irritated. Eventually the wall pf the pore may rupture and spill out and affect the surrounding pores and cause then to become inflamed as well. These ruptured follicles are referred to as a Papule. After the rupture the body responds by flooding the infected area with white blood cells to begin healing. It is this rush of white blood cells that causes the pimple to turn into a large Nodule or Cysts.
Since everyone is different and no two people's body chemistry will be the same, there are many different types of treatment available on the market today. Through years of research, science has made many advances in the ability to control Acne, but as yet there is no cure. The goal is not to cure the Acne but get control over outbreaks and prevent possible scarring. Severe Acne that is not treated can eventually lead to deep scars on the skin, so even though a teen may grow out of the Acne breakouts, they may be left with terrible scar that will last a lifetime. It is always a good idea to seek out help from your local Portland Acne Treatment Specialist. Your dermatologist can examine your skin and help you determine the best course of action for treatment.
There are however several things that you can do for yourself as well. Help bring your Acne breakouts under control once and for all. Use a good over the counter Acne Wash, but only use it about twice a day at most otherwise you may dry out your skin to much. Only use your hands to wash your face, a washcloth may irritate the skin more and don't scrub really hard either. This may dislodge more dead skin cells and force them even deeper into the pores. Be sure to shower every time you workout or sweat heavily, the oil and sweat can trap dirt and bacteria causing the pores to become clogged and inflamed. For girls and women, try to only use powder make-ups. Cream make-up can more irritating to your skin than a good healthy natural mineral powder. Be sure to remove all make-up before bedtime too, rubbing on your pillow all night can force make-up down into your follicles and cause another outbreak. Again, these are only suggestions to help you fight off Acne Breakouts, but it is always best to enlist the advice and guidance of an expert Portland Dermatologist to help combat your severe Acne.
