Seeking The Best Acne Treatments? Read Our Report

A great deal of research and development has been poured into the best acne treatments. Acne is a very common dermatological condition and as in any other common affliction, there's money to be made. Fortunately this means that there's likely to be something available to help almost every acne patient.

Individual patients respond differently to treatments and as a consequence it is sometimes necessary to try several different alternatives in order to discover the best acne treatment. In all but the mildest of cases, it is definitely advisable to consult a dermatologist, medical practitioner or pharmacist for expert advice.

Prevention – Better Than Cure

It would be lovely if there was a vaccine to guarantee an acne-free life but sadly that's not the case, at least for now. Of course there are some sensible precautions that can help reduce the severity of acne outbreaks, or even help in reducing the likelihood of recurrences. Adopting an effective daily cleansing regimen is the first change to make. By practicing scrupulous cleanliness and avoiding contact with irritating products it is possible to reduce the likelihood or severity of an acne outbreak. As in many things, keeping to a good diet is helpful. A good diet will include fresh fruit and vegetables, plus other essential components whilst avoiding high-fat, high-sugar products. There's plenty of advice available on the web, just be sure to avoid the quacks and the dietary scams!

Evidence-Based Conventional Medicine

When acne strikes, a good place to start treatment is likely to be an over-the-counter lotion or cream containing the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide. A range of concentrations is available. It is counter-intuitive but clinical research suggests that all concentrations have much the same effectiveness. As the lower concentrations tend to produce milder side-effects, start with one of these and only increase the concentration if required. Benzoyl peroxide is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial . It reduces sebum production as well, so it is rated as one of the best acne treatments. There are some side effects to consider. Skin irritation and dryness may be experienced but these are not generally severe.

By slowing down sebaceous oil production, vitamin A can help in reducing acne symptoms. Conventionally, vitamin A preparations contain retinoids. Retinoids are derivative chemicals which are based on vitamin A. They are topical treatments. This means that they are applied directly to the affected areas of skin. Their anti-bacterial effects are also of benefit. Regarding unwanted side-effects, a common complaint comes from the intense irritation that may be experienced.

An important warning - retinoids should never be used by pregnant women or nursing mothers as fetal damage may occur. For mild to moderate acne, another option to try is the preparations which are based on azelaic acid. These are available in cream form and the concentration is usually 20%. Azelaic acid treatment has been found to be less irritating than retinoid treatment. There's a risk of causing skin changes which reduce skin pigmentation. Consequently they may be the best acne treatments for lighter-skinned subjects.

Alternative Approaches

Despite little clinical evidence in support of their effectiveness, countless natural products have been suggested as acne treatments. There's a vocal school of thought that advocates the exclusive use of natural or herbal remedies regardless of whether their use is evidence-based or not.  In contrast, mainstream scientists and physicians continue to demonstrate compelling evidence that the best acne treatments are the well-established and clinically-trialled pharmaceutical ones.

An enormous range of natural ingredients has been proposed for acne treatment. This includes honey, cinnamon, mint and lemon or orange derivatives such as juice and peel. There are many others. The ingredients are prepared as a cream, paste or lotion that is regularly applied to the skin. Sometimes a daily regimen is specified, and this at least may be beneficial to the patient.

Acne Scars

The disfigurement caused by acne scarring is characterised by keloid scars with localized thickening and depressed scars which are sometimes described as ice-pick scars. Techniques like micro-dermabrasion and laser therapy are possibilities here. These abrade the skin's surface, promoting skin re-generation and healing. The procedure can be very unpleasant and dermabrasion leads to temporary surface bleeding or redness. Consult a specialist before proceeding.
