Tea Tree Oil Uses - Preventing Body Acne

Posted: Dec 07, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Although body acne develops in the same way as facial acne, you may want to treat if differently.  A majority of commercial acne removal products, including washes, soaps, gels, toners, exfoliators, creams, etc. are made specifically for the face.  To treat acne on other areas of your body, tea tree oil is an effective and natural solution.

Tea tree oil is obtained from the leaves of a tree called the Melaleuca tree.  The tree grows only in Australia and is in the same family as the well-known eucalyptus tree. The oil is a natural antiseptic and for centuries has been used to treat a variety of skin infections including those caused by bacteria, viruses, and even fungi.  As such, it is a fantastic product to use on body acne.

Propionibacterium acnes is the name of the bacteria that causes acne. When a pore is blocked, this bacterium multiplies significantly depositing chemicals that destroy the walls of the pore, emptying more bacteria into the surrounding skin - the result being an acne lesion (better known as a pimple).

Tea tree oil has been proven to kill this propionibacterium acnes without the harsh ingredients often found in commercial acne products. What's more, is that it not only kills the bad bacteria found in the skin but preserves the good bacteria that your skin needs to remain healthy.

Because it is an oil-based product, it will not dry your skin as other products can.  It truly is the best of both worlds, an antiseptic that also moisturizes. Studies have also showed that although tea tree oil is a bit less effective than benzyol peroxide, there are significantly less side effects with the oil, including: stinging, itchiness, burning, and dryness.

Tea tree oil can be found any place where essential oils are sold.  While some people find no irritation from directly applying undiluted oil to their acne, you will want to do a small test first to see how your skin responds.  If irritation occurs, try mixing the oil with a light body lotion or aloe vera gel. You can also add the oil to your daily body wash for a daily body acne treatment.  If you'd prefer not to go through the fuss of combining the oil yourself, look for the growing number of acne and body products that already contain tea tree oil as its main ingredient.
