Home treatment for acne has a lot of advantages over traditional over-the-counter remedies. Although most of them are only for mild to moderate conditions, they have been found to be generally effective, safe and cheaper than branded remedies.
An appropriate home treatment for acne is available to every major skin type. To guide you on you selection, here are a few tips.
1. For oily skin. This is the type most prone to acne and the one that requires constant care and monitoring. The most important part of caring for oily skin is keeping it clean. Fresh milk has been found effective in minimizing the oil in the skin. This should be used like a facial wash before going to bed.
Face packs and masks are also recommended for oily skin types. Tomatoes; honey mixed with egg; oatmeal; or yoghurt are the most effective home remedies for people with oily skin. You can choose any of these ingredients and mix them until they become clay-like (except for the mixture of honey and egg which could be used as facial mask). Pat the resulting pack on the face and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash it off with clean water afterwards.
2. For dry skin. The primary concern for dry skin is keeping it soft and moisturized. Dry skin can also become prone to pimples and other skin breakouts. The best home-made formulas for keeping dry skin healthy are those made from fresh fruits. You can use mashed papaya, mango, avocado or peach to make a face pack that can be applied to the skin. Leave the pack on for 30 minutes then wash it off with clean water. For better results, add more fresh vegetables and fruits to your diet and increase your daily intake of water.
3. For sensitive skin. Choose your remedies carefully - that's the first thing you need to remember about sensitive skin. This type of skin still needs to be taken care of and maintained, and using natural products is your best option since they are less likely to harm you. But before using any fruit or home-made mixture, make sure that you are not allergic to any of them. You could try applying your prepared mixture on a patch of skin in your arm to see how it reacts. If you get rashes or redness from any formula, stop using it immediately.
Your best option, if you have sensitive skin, is to use the purest home-made remedy; and your best bet will likely be fresh fruits. You can use orange rinds, lemon juice, papaya and avocado as facial masks or facial wash. Use the meat of the fruit or its juice and not the skin or peel; the rough edges of the fruit skin might cause your skin to get irritated. Aloe vera (the sticky, juicy substance found inside when you cut it) is also a potential cure if you have acne.
When choosing your home treatment for acne, you should always consider your type of skin. Knowing what your skin needs and what sets off allergic reactions is important before you go about mixing materials in your bowl. Once you find what's appropriate for you, then you can spend your time happily making the pack or wash or mask that can help you keep those pimples at bay.
