Treating Severe Acne

What are some of the medications used for the care of acne and pimples? If you have been having some difficulty controlling your acne by washing your face with care and the acne is getting worse, it is now time to see a dermatologist. If the acne gets really bad, you could have problems with scars. A dermatologist can determine which medications are best for you by your skin type and the condition of your acne. Some of the acne medications are topical creams, which is a lotion, and others are taken orally. There are a lot of medications available to use, I will only give the more commonly prescribed . With a little online research, you will learn a lot about what can be used and the side effects that you may experience.

First are the topical lotions, they will kill bacteria and help normalize the dead skin cells. There is Tretinoin and Adapalene, Tretinoin can be found in Avita, Retin-A, Renova, and Adapalene can be found in Differin. Azelaic Acid works by eliminating the bacteria and has a benefit of helping rid the discoloration left after your acne has healed. Tazorac cream is a retinoid that Tazorac website calls a prodrug. It means it is inefective until it is absorbed through the skin, they claim it is the only retinoid that does that.

Oral antibiotics are the other kind of product that can be prescribed. If you have a more severe acne condition, the dermatologist may prescribe medications to help fight bacteria and infections. Oral antibiotics fall within two groups: tetracyclines and macrolides. Tetracycline may have to be taken many times during the day on an empty stomach and it could make your skin sensitive to the sun. Doxycycline is a newer tetracycline that could be more tolerable to use. What could be the most effective tetracycline is Minocycline. It works by killing the bacteria the quickest and the bacteria will not develop a resistance to it like could happen with the others. Another alternative is Erythromycin, it is more affordable but is not as effective as the others. Oral contraceptions are another type of medication used for acne. It can be used for acne brought about by hormonal imbalance in young girls.

Remember that you should only use these if prescribed to you by a dermatologist. You may experience some side effects with any these medications. Your dermatologist will be able to monitor your progress and make any changes as needed. If you feel any discomfort from the medication, be sure to let your doctor know so they can make changes with your prescription.
