Treatments for Acne

Acne is a red, irritating skin rash primarily affecting teenagers and young adults. It can, however, occur at all ages. About 80 percent of teenagers are affected by acne between the ages of 13 and 17. However, about five percent of women and one percent of men aged 25 to 40 continue to get or develop acne. It can vary from quite mild to extremely severe. Treatment choice depends upon whether the acne is mild, moderate, or severe.

There are a few common types of acne, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules. Your skin's natural oils not being able to get to the surface cause all of these forms of acne.

No one is certain as to what exactly causes acne or why it usually begins in adolescence, but hormones, primarily testosterone, certainly play a large role. Acne is easily recognized by the appearance of the spots and by their distribution on the body.

Alternative treatments for acne focus on self care. It's important to keep spot-prone areas clean, so wash the affected area twice a day with an unperfumed cleanser. Washing your face a few times a day is the first step in keeping your pores clean and clear. The skin needs a certain amount of oil to maintain its natural condition, so it's best to use gentle soaps and not to scrub your skin too hard when washing.

As with most diseases, acne responds best if treatment is begun early in the course of the disease. Treating your acne before it becomes severe may also help to reduce permanent scarring.
