What Causes Whiteheads?

Whiteheads are caused by dead skin cells and the natural oils that are normally flushed out of the pores. Only thing is the oils which contain sebum and the cells become clogged in the pore and is unable to flow out. This material can become hard and can be called a plug. There is a small opening in the skin that allows the top of the plug to become visible and that is what is called a whitehead.

If the opening in the skin was larger the air would have more contact with the plug and oxidation would turn it a dark color, this would be a blackhead. Some skin specialists are of the belief that some people produce a drier subum that may be more prone to causing the plugs which lead to whiteheads.

Washing the face on a regular basis may help prevent or reduce the formation of whiteheads. If something stronger is needed try an acne face cleanser that contains the chemicals salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide. Some acne cleansers may be more suited to certain skin types than others. If you have a naturally dry or oily skin you may have to match your skin type up with something compatible. It would also be wise to try a product with weaker percent solution of chemical to see if it helps. If it is not strong enough then try something with a higher percentage in it.

For someone who has trouble controlling whiteheads or the acne is getting progressively worse it may be advisable to see a dermatologist. It would be good to keep any acne under control as best as possible to avoid any scarring in the future. Drink plenty of water to keep your system flushed out and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Take care of your skin!
