Christian 12 Step Programs

Posted: Dec 13, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Christian Twelve Step programs have been used successfully for overcoming all kinds of destructive addictions, including drugs and alcoholism. Here is a quick overview of each step of the process.

STEP ONE is recognizing our brokenness.  We understand that we are separated from God and we are unable to change this on our own.  Our lives are broken and have become unmanageable.

I know nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
(ROMANS 7:18)

STEP TWO is the birthing of faith within us.  We realize that it will take a power much greater than ourselves to restore us.

For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.
(PHILLIPIANS 2:13)

STEP THREE of the Christian 12 step programs, is deciding to let God be in charge of our lives.  We must make a decision to surrender our lives and our wills to Godís care.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of Godís mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God ñ which is your spiritual worship.
(ROMANS 12:1)

STEP FOUR begins our self-examination.  It is an honest and soul-bearing inventory of ourselves.

Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.

(LAMANTATIONS 3:40)

STEP FIVE involves the discipline of confession.  We must admit to God, ourselves and another person the exact nature of our addiction.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed
(JAMES 5:16)

STEP SIX is the step for repentance in the Christian 12 step programs.  We are willing and open to Godís direction in changing and removing the defective areas of our character.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up
(JAMES 4:10)

STEP SEVEN is the transformation of our old nature or character.  We come before God and ask Him to remove our failures and shortcomings.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
(1JOHN 1:9)

STEP EIGHT is taking a hard look at our relationships and preparing to make amends for past mistakes. It is helpful to make a list of the people we have harmed and endeavor to make it right.

Do to others as you would have them do to you.
(LUKE 6:31)

STEP NINE is the actual discipline of making amends.  If at all possible, make amends directly with the people you have wronged, unless doing so would injure them or others.

Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
(MATTHEW 5:23-24)

STEP TEN will involve a continuation of your progress in recovery.  Keep a constant personal inventory and when you mess up, confess it immediately.

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you donít fall.
(1 CORINTHIANS 10:12)

STEP ELEVEN is a spiritual program of spiritual discipline in prayer and meditation.  Ask God in prayer for his direction and knowledge of His will for your life and the Godly strength to fulfill His work in your life.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.
(COLOSSIANS 3:16)

STEP TWELVE involves personal ministry.  Once you have been delivered from your addiction as a result of these Christian 12 step programs, be willing to help others with your testimony and witness.

Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, as you also may be tempted.
(GALATIANS 6:1)
These Christian 12 step programs are based on Godly principles and the Word of God.
