It is defined ... The act of discouraging, or the state of being discouraged; depression or weakening of confidence - dejection. Likewise, depression, is also a strong intense emotion that is fueled by negative thoughts (what you think on constantly)that's not positive, and/or a series of overwhelming events that you have encountered. Both can make it pretty hard to function, when life has hit you hard in the face.

My frame was not hidden from You when I was being formed in secret [and] intricately and curiously wrought [as if embroidered with various colors]. In the depths of the earth [a region of darkness and mystery]. Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days [of my life] were written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them. You sift and search out my path and my lying down, and You are acquainted with all my ways. How precious and weighty also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
