3 Important Things You Must Know About ADHD Issues

What have WWII soldiers, troops serving in Afghanistan and ADHD children got in common? Well, the troops are and were given amphetamines to keep them awake and fight fatigue and many ADHD children are given the same drug! The drug names are by now household words such as Adderall, Ritalin and Strattera.

One of the big ADHD issues is that parents have to decide whether it is a good idea to give their children an amphetamine which is a powerful mind altering drug and psychostimulant and which can certainly lead to dependency and may also encourage substance abuse. Why do you think amphetamines are still a Schedule II drug which basically means that they have a potential for abuse and there is a risk of addiction. At this point you may want to investigate what are the alternative treatments for ADHD.

Another one of the ADHD issues is the painful fact that many marriages are under extra stress and strain when there is an ADHD child in the family. But research shows that where family counselling is sought, then there is reduced incidence of hyperactivity and restlessness and other behavior problems among children within the family unit.

Of all the ADHD issues, the third one is even more painful in that a US study just released shows that after a study of 10,000 adolescents, they found that children with ADHD were twice as likely to get involved in criminal activities in their adult life. The most common crimes were theft and armed robbery. This study has just been published in the Journal of Mental Health Policy and Economics. The other alarming fact which comes out of this study is that ADHD children were 50% more likely to start selling drugs. This comes as no surprise , given that Adderall is now a popular drug for recreational use and also for helping college students concentrate before an exam. Handling ADHD issues such as substance abuse is not made easier by the fact that these drugs are in great demand on the school parking lot.

In looking at ADHD issues, parents have to consider what are the advantages and disadvantages of any treatment. They should know that homeopathic treatment for ADHD has no side effects and there is no risk of addiction. The second thing they should be aware of in handling ADHD issues is that behavior modification techniques can and do work just as well as the drugs and their effects are permanent and their kids have a much better chance in life. Addressing behavioural problems is probably the best way of all of treating ADHD.
