ADHD Problems - Is Your Child Getting The Help He Or She Really Needs?

Posted: Feb 13, 2011 |

ADHD problems can lead to ruined lives unless they are solved during childhood. The number of ADHD sufferers who carry this into adulthood is quite high. Look at the figures for teenagers. We now know that about 50% of teens in juvenile facilities have ADHD. We also know that those kids who are untreated or undiagnosed are going to clock up at least two arrests by the time they reach the age of eighteen.

So ADHD problems need to be nipped in the bud. That means getting the proper diagnosis and then deciding on what may be the best treatment for your child. The medication option using psychostimulants such as Vyvanse and Concerta is now regarded in most respected medical circles as being extremely limiting and will not help that much in the long run.

We know from the work of Dr. William Pelham of the University of Florida that the effects of these meds tend to wear off after three years. The problems with hyperactivity and inattention may come back and in the meantime, the child has not really been helped with any behavior modification program.

How can we make sure that the ADHD child is getting the help that he or she really needs? First, we have to decide that behavior is not ignored. Good behavior has to be praised and the consequences of inappropriate behavior has to be dealt with as well. This is at the very heart of any behavior modification program and there is lots of help available now with help lines, forums and also locally based groups who belong to CHADD.

The next way we can help the child with ADHD problems is to make sure that our home is actually ADHD friendly. That means less clutter, more organized routines and leads to less confusion all round. We can post checklists, charts, star systems for rewards and prizes and so on. All these help the child to navigate the home because with ADHD, distraction and forgetting things is a real problem. Breaking tasks down and ensuring that there are a few choices as regards clothes and food can all help. Are we doing enough to make it that bit easier for them?

As regards medication, psychostimulants are limited as regards solving ADHD problems. Why not consider an alternative where the child is treated holistically and there are no side effects or health risks at all. Millions of parents have tried these in conjunction with a behavior modification program and have been delighted with the results.

The first problem that parents have to face when dealing with the ADHD problem child is whether to medicate or not. That decision has to be an informed one and any parent should avoid well meaning advice from a school teacher who probably is looking for a quieter life and recommends stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall. That is really no long term solution at all. In any case, a teacher is not a medical practitioner.
