ADHD Treatment Efficacy - The Questions We Must Ask To Protect Our Children

Posted: Feb 07, 2011 |

Let's face it. The bottom line on how we judge ADHD treatment efficacy is whether it is safe and effective. We know that some of the psychostimulants just fail the test as regards this essential criteria. When looking at the efficacy of treatments for ADHD, we want to get all the information that we can but very often, this is just not possible.

Let us take Ritalin as an example as that is a household name in ADHD circles and there are even jokes about kids having Ritalin for breakfast. Have we got all the information available? Is it on the Internet? The answer is that some of the material is on the Web and in abundance. For example there are over 9,000 articles published on how toxic Ritalin is.

If you do a search on Google about sudden deaths from Ritalin, you will find over 350,000 entries! In effect, the number of deaths are very few but if you read the FDA warnings about these drugs, you realize that they are covering their backs and you begin to wonder why they are doing that so thoroughly!

There are people who will hotly argue that psychostimulants are safe enough and that they actually will help with some of the ADHD symptoms such as calming a child, helping him to concentrate and be less fidgety and hyperactive. This is true but I want the full story and the most alarming fact is that there are no long term studies on the effects over time on the child's neural development. Yet, Ritalin has been on the market for almost fifty years now!

The second question we need to ask about ADHD treatment efficacy is how effective it is in alleviating some of the symptoms. It is true that they are effective for about 70% of the children who are taking them. We will not deny that but the latest research coming from respected ADHD experts such as Dr. William Pelham suggest a rather different and more disturbing picture.

His research shows that the effects of these medications will wear off after about two to three years so the long term effects are nullified. If the child has not been following any behavioral treatment, he is likely to regress rather than make progress. That is a very alarming scenario and may partly explain why so many adults carry this mental disorder into adulthood.

The third question we need to ask before we judge ADHD treatment efficacy is whether it is really going to cure ADHD. The answer is that it cannot do that at all as there is no cure for ADHD, as yet.

That encourages us to look elsewhere for a different type of medication which is more effective and which carries no health risks at all. The answer is that ADHD homeopathic remedies are enjoying a boom in spite of the best efforts of many lobbies who wish to discredit homeopathy.

Do not let that influence you. ADHD treatment efficacy using homeopathy is second to none as there are no side effects and health risks are zero. Why not check this out for yourself so that you can be the best judge.

It's unbelievable but the drugs companies are still raking in handsome profits for ADHD drugs, even when there is a recession which will take 80 years to recover from. Adderall XR provided a lot more revenue for the pharmaceutical company manufacturing it - in fact revenue shot up by 16.5% in the last quarter. Prescriptions for Vyvanse, another popular ADHD drug, rose by 102% this quarter compared to 2008.

The modern scientific explanation about the effectiveness of Acupuncture treatment is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain, including endorphins, enkephalins and other neurotransmitters. Either these chemicals will change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones that influence the body's own internal regulating system.

Treatment of ADHD can be very patchy and a lot depends on the education of the parents, the doctors and the teachers. These are the main stakeholders in the game and they all can play a vital role. But an alternative therapy for ADHD is often viewed with some hostility and suspicion, which is most unfair in my view.

Many parents do not really worry too much about help for child with ADHD. That is because they think that medication will do the trick and there is little else that can be done. They are wrong of course in that the child's environment is vital. All the experts are agreed on this and medical authorities from the CDC to the NIH are all on the same page, officially.
