Main Causes Of ADHD - Guidelines For Parents

Can a child's diet be one of the main causes of ADHD? Is sugar the culprit? These are some of the questions that parents ask about the causes of ADHD. The genetic link though, seems to be one of the main causes but this will not account for many cases. Certainly, the environment, diet, lead poisoning and maybe a low weight at birth all seem to be contributory factors.

The NIMH (National Institute for Mental Health) has done some research and this has shown that ADHD children seem to have a thinner brain tissue but this later developed normally. Interestingly enough, when it did so, the ADHD symptoms seemed to be less dominant. That area of the brain , by the way, is associated with our attention spans and levels of concentration. These, of course are some of the main symptoms of ADHD, inattentiveness and lack of concentration. This defect in the child's brain development would seem to be one of the main causes of ADHD.

We also know from some research that events and lifestyle in pregnancy may well lead to a higher incidence of ADHD in the child although there is no firm evidence for this. The culprits to avoid during pregnancy are alcohol, cigarette smoking and lead. People who live in old buildings are exposed to lead which is contained in the pipes and even in the old paint on the walls. Our environment could therefore be one of the causes of ADHD.

There are also theories about a genetic connection and there seems to be fairly conclusive evidence now that the genetic link is decisive although it will not be the major cause. Certainly, there is loads of evidence to show that ADHD runs in families and many parents realize that they themselves have ADHD when their children are diagnosed. The genetic link is now accepted as one of the main causes of ADHD.

Treatment for ADHD can vary from stimulant medications which are basically made up of amphetamines. I was shocked to see that Adderall, one of the most popular drugs for ADHD is actually approved for children of three and upwards. All the other meds like Ritalin, Strattera and Vyvanse are approved for pediatric use from the age of six. Imagine giving an amphetamine to a child of three ! This is where parents begin to get alarmed as they know that these stimulants, while reducing symptoms of ADHD, are associated with heart problems, loss of appetite and a possible risk of addiction and drug abuse.

There are ADHD homeopathic remedies which have no side effects or long term risks and cost a lot less. Unfortunately, there is not much information about these remedies because of the powerful lobbies associated with the drug companies. You could find out some more information about one of America's most reputable companies which is actually under FDA supervision and which offer a one year guarantee. Whatever the main causes of ADHD, choosing the right treatment for your child is crucial.

There has been a lot of controversy about the ADHD main cause and it is certainly true to say that diet has got nothing to do with the actual cause. Neither has bad parenting nor sugary cereals and snacks! These are not the causes at all although they certainly have an effect on how treatment is administered in the home and can be a decisive factor in alleviating symptoms.
