A Guide To Buy A Ferret - Things To Consider Before Purchasing One

The decision to buy a ferret and adding these little fun-loving creatures to your family must never be made on an impulse. As a prospective ferret owner it is highly recommended that you learn everything about ferrets and their lifestyle, know the costs of caring for it, and think hard prior to making your decision.

Although they make a perfect family pet, there are a certain things that must be taken into consideration prior to purchasing these cute-little pets.

To start off with the purchase price of ferrets, there are several different price quotes for cute-little pets available in the market. You can be charged anywhere from $65 to $250, or even above. The cost to buy a ferret is just the initial cost incurred by the ferret owner. Add to the purchase price the cost of ferret food and supplies at the rate of $500 a year, and add another $150 to $350 for vaccinations and vet care, and other sundry expenses related to the cost of buying cages, toys and other accessories.

In many places having a ferret for a pet is considered to be illegal. It is your responsibility to find out from your local wildlife or pets Department whether your district is a ferret-free-zone or not.

The gender is yet another matter of importance. Hobs (male ferrets) and Jills (female ferrets) have their unique pros and cons. Unmated Jills are known to remain in "heat" for six months during which their behavior and physical appearances undergo changes. On the other hand, an unaltered Hobs tends to get all the more aggressive during the breeding season, and as an owner you should be aware of this tendency.

The color, age or gender of a ferret does not matter as much as the health of the ferret. When buying a new ferret choose a healthy one. It is the typical ferret behavior and appearance which will tell you whether your pet ferret is in its best of health or not. Remember, a healthy ferret will always be playful, curious and alert with clean and pink mouth, ears, and pads.

Ferrets are excellent companions and great pets. However, it is not at all recommended to buy a ferret in households where there are children younger than 6 or 7 years of age. If properly trained, ferrets get along fantastically with other household pets like cats and dogs.
