I have seen a lot of common booklet printing blunders in my time. Most of these problems typically arise simply because some designers and editors are ignorant about how printing booklets really should be done. Hence knowledge is really the only barrier that can save anyone from creating big booklet printing blunders. To solve this, I have created this small list of the common booklet printing mistakes that people make. Hopefully this saves people some time and some money by avoiding them when they print their booklets.
Mismanaged pages: One big mistake that people seem to always do in booklet printing is to mismanage their pages. This is because in most cases, booklets are printed in number sets of four or eight pages. What most people often do is to create booklet content that does not precisely fit those numbers of pages. This results in several blank pages which becomes just a lot of wasted space and a lot of wasted money as well.
So to prevent this from happening, you must manage your booklet content well. Go for a set target of pages. Write your content as well as layout your pictures and paragraphs that should fit the number of pages you need. Try to cut down or simplify content instead of adding stuff to get those target pages so that you can get the most efficient booklet configuration as possible.
No reader helpers: Another big mistake that some people do is to not add helpful features for readers. This includes page numbering, tables of content and chapter or section headers. These people think that since booklets are just small prints, they won’t need such features. In actuality though, they are still extremely vital. Those features help readers to read booklets efficiently, without them they will have a more difficult time looking for the information that they need. It is only professional to integrate these features onto a booklet design. So always add in these features to make your color booklets better and more helpful.
Cheap covers: In terms of booklet material, some people also make the mistake in printing their covers with the same material as the body pages. This may seem like the normal thing to do, but in fact for booklets, it is always recommended to make your covers a little better by using thicker or higher quality paper than the rest. This makes the cover more durable protecting most of the pages inside. So always try to print your booklets like this to get better quality booklets produced.
Small batch printing: Finally a common and perhaps costly mistake for some people is to print booklets in small batches. Printing piecemeal is never really a good option since you will always get quotations at a higher rate per booklet when you do these. When you print in bulk however, you will always get cheaper printing quotations. So always plan ahead and estimate the final number of booklets that you will need. This should save you a lot of money in booklet printing.
Now you know what to avoid, and how to avoid blunders in booklet printing. With luck, once you remember these tips you should have no problems whatsoever in your own booklet printing run.
