Horse Nutrition- I'm here to help

Posted: Aug 03, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Horse nutrition is a difficult and complex thing and it often gets a little overwhelming at times. Although many horse owners don't need to worry too much in the summer in regards to bucket feeds due to the extra goodness in the grass when the winter comes it can be a difficult time working out which feed is suitable for your horse. Some people are unfortunate enough to have a poor-doer and they have to feed them up throughout the summer as well regardless of how good the grass is. If you find choosing feed difficult for your pony I've written the following article to help you with choosing what's right for yours. I hope you find the following article helpful.

Firstly you need to consider whether your pet is a good-doer or a poor one, once you've established this you can then decide upon whether they need a lot of feed and feed which bulks them up or whether need a token gesture to be fed with horse supplements.

If you pony holds their weight well you may wish to just feed them some chaff or fibre based feed so that you're aiding their digestive system. The same applies if they aren't in work or in very light work. As long as they have a good source of grass or hay they should only need a bucket feed to help bulk their feed up and allow you to mix the feed with horse supplements.

If you they are in steady work which isn't too hard you may wish to consider something like sugar beet. This is a form of feed which has a slow release of energy which is perfect for regular work. If they are in heavy work this isn't good due to it being heavy in their stomach which can give them cramp but also doesn't give them the energy they need.

If they are in heavy work I would recommend a feed which gives a quick burst of energy such as oats or barley. I wouldn't suggest this with all animals as it can make certain characters extremely fizzy which isn't good.

Don't forget that all evening or morning feeds should have enough fibre in too as this is vitally important to this animal. It's also worth remembering that they should be grazing 20 hours out of 24 so you need to always supply them with hay or haylage if they do not have grass.

I hope I've helped you with any horse nutrition problems you may have had. Don't forget that their are always horse nutrition specialist at your local saddlery so make best use of them if you're still stuck.
