As you may or may not know I've written previous articles explaining septic tanks. Once you've got your head around a septic tank and how they may change how you do things around the house they aren't too difficult to deal with. By tipping cooking oils, grease and other thick liquids down the drain you may cause your drain to be blocked. Not only is it likely to block your drains due to oils being difficult to degrade but you're also likely to give yourself odour problems which are difficult to get rid of.

If you use biological washing up powder you should change to non-biological. Along with this anything which has a high concentration of bleach or caustic soda. It's also worth staying away from pesticides, herbicides and anything with inorganic materials in it.
If an old or big tree has begun to spread it's root over the area of the tank in your garden it's wise to remove the problem as growing roots can rupture the tank and not only cause you a lot of problems but also a great deal of money!
You'll often find if you ring up a sewage disposal company for a quote they'll quickly run through whether you've done any of these things so they have a rough idea as to how big or difficult the job may be. It's always worth being completely honest with them.
