Septic tanks - Prevent the problems

Posted: Sep 19, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

As you may or may not know I've written previous articles explaining septic tanks.  Once you've got your head around a septic tank and how they may change how you do things around the house they aren't too difficult to deal with. I've previously written articles explaining how they work and how there are different chambers for different jobs. I'm now going to explain to you potential problems and how you can prevent them. I hope you find the following article informative and useful.

By tipping cooking oils, grease and other thick liquids down the drain you may cause your drain to be blocked.  Not only is it likely to block your drains due to oils being difficult to degrade but you're also likely to give yourself odour problems which are difficult to get rid of.

If you aren't on mains drains but on septic tanks certain hygiene items such as tampons or sanitary towels cannot be put down the toilet as this will quickly clog up the tank. You may also find that if this keeps happens companies will charge you extra for the service to remove the problem.

It's wise not to use a waste disposal unit as again the access food and other products will very quickly fill up your pipes. It may be worth throwing the waste in the bin or getting a compost heap.

If you use biological washing up powder you should change to non-biological. Along with this anything which has a high concentration of bleach or caustic soda. It's also worth staying away from pesticides, herbicides and anything with inorganic materials in it.

If an old or big tree has begun to spread it's root over the area of the tank in your garden it's wise to remove the problem as growing roots can rupture the tank and not only cause you a lot of problems but also a great deal of money!

You'll often find if you ring up a sewage disposal company for a quote they'll quickly run through whether you've done any of these things so they have a rough idea as to how big or difficult the job may be. It's always worth being completely honest with them.

What is a septic tank? While most people have heard of it, they are not very sure of what is its actual purpose. It is basically an individual sewage treatment system which uses different methods to dispose of solid and/or liquid waste. Not all houses and offices can be connected to major sewage lines. In that case, septic tanks are installed in the ground to get the job done.

Precast concrete septic tanks are generally more robust than tanks made of steel, plastic or high-density polyethylene . Precast concrete is supple enough to endure excessive loading conditions without the worry of collapse or failure and has many other benefits over tanks which are made of different materials.
