Top Ten Tips For Working From A Home Office

Posted: Mar 19, 2010 |
  1. Dedicate a work space.  This could be as simple as a desk under the stairs or as professional as a well insulated garden office.
  2. Organise your time.  The flexibility of home-working is an advantage but scheduling your work tasks is important and helps you hit your goals.
  3. Inform your family and friends.  It may be difficult to deal with requests to help around home, to chat with friends or double up working with child care on a regular basis.  Communicating your need for peace at work at the offset helps pre-empt problems and separates your work from your home life.
  4. Back up your work securely.  All businesses need to consider their security these days, think of the loss you would suffer if your hard drive packed in.  Whether you copy files onto a memory stick or separate hard drive, have a regular method of backing everything up every day.
  5. Take lunch breaks.  Working from home can be intense and the inclination is to get as much done as possible.  Taking a proper lunch breaks helps gain perspective on current issues and creative developments and can often provide the solution you need.
  6. Get comfortable with your choice of furnishings.  Is your chair comfortable and is your monitor at the correct height for you?  Do you have all the equipment you need and is it to hand?
  7. Consider healthy working.  Plants in your office space help freshen the air and lots of natural light helps you perform better.  If you're working in a dark area, try solar bulbs in your lamps.  Avoid RSI by adjusting your working position properly and take regular breaks.
  8. Set up different ways for clients, colleagues and family to contact you.  Email, a normal landline, a mobile, instant messaging service and a Skype phone. When one device goes down, your people can still reach you and you can reach them.
  9. Social time.  Home working can be isolating as the social aspects of a shared office are missing.  We all need some social contact so consider where this will fit into your day.  After work gym sessions, pub meetings, club evenings, whatever suits your lifestyle and gets you rejuvenated.
  10. Rewards.  Recent surveys report that home workers are 40% more productive than office based workers.  Set goals for yourself and when you meet them – have a reward such as a Friday afternoon beauty treat or weekend tickets for a football game.

There's no doubt about it – home working is most advantageous with a large dose of self-motivation and a sprinkling of stubborness.  The trick to make it work is in separating home life from work life and finding a healthy balance between the two.  There are many financial and tax benefits from using a professional garden office space for your work and it can double up as a teenagers study or chill room in the evenings.  That crucial separation from the house automatically divides your work from family time and makes a healthy balance and optimum working efficiency so much easier to achieve.
