Basic principles of religion in India
Dalip Singh Wasan, advocate.
The people of India are divided into so many religions and into so many sub religions, but still they have adopted certain principles which are common to all. They had been fighting and they are still fighting and are always in a competitive mood, but still they believe in the basic principles and those principles are enumerated below:-
(1) They all believe in God.
(2) They believe in one God though they may be having so many idols, but still they believe in one God.
(3) They believe in prayer and they have written so many books of prayer.
(4) They worship God and sing songs from these religious books.
(5) They believe in creating hardship for them and then suffer those hardship and they believe that this shall please God.
(6) They believe in fasts.
(7) They believe that a man should keep God present in his heart and should never forget Him.
(8) They believe that sins are never pardoned and the man who commits sins shall have to suffer punishment and God shall give him punishment. If he had committed a big sin, then he shall suffer for a long period and if the punishment is not over in one life, the man shall have to come again and suffer the remaining punishment in the second, third or fourth life.
(9) They have counted lives upto 84,00,000. The list is not available with them, but in most of the religious books, this number is quoted.
(10) They believe in the existence of the Devil who is equally strong and that is the reason, in most of the cases he overtakes God and this man is prompted to commit crimes, sins and the misconducts.
(11) They believe that we all have been sent by God and therefore, He is our parent and we live life as per his directions and when He so desires, he recalls us and we go back i.e. we die.
(12) They believe that God Himself writes the luck of each one of us and that is not liable to change. We shall have to suffer or we shall enjoy as per entries in this luck writing.
(13) They all believe that prayer gives us power to suffer the punishment.
(14) They tell us that man should work on his plans and he should leave the result with God who may give him success or a failure.
(15) If there are bad day, an Indian believes that it is the gift of God and he should suffer this hardship being God’s gift.
(16) They believe that it had been decided by God Himself when he was proposing a family for us and we have got no discretion or right to have a choice of our parents.
(17) They believe that their parents are like God for them and therefore, they believe that first of all parents must be given due respect and they should ensure that the status and situation of parents is higher even than the position and status of God for them.
(18) They believe in daily recitation of religious books.
(19) They believe that they should visit religious places and some of them do not utilize any vehicle and sometime they are found having pilgrimage on foot and those too bear foot.
(20) They believe that they should take bath before they take up a religious book or they are reciting a religious book.
(21) They believe that excepting their life partner, all others are like brothers, sisters, mothers, daughters, sons, father for them. They believe that the man or the woman who crosses the marriage bonds is not a religious person.
(22) They believe in the court of Dharam Raj where each soul shall be giving accounts what he had been doing during life time and shall have to accept punishment and award as pronounced by Dharam Raj.
(23) They believe that all the religions had been established at different places and that is the reason they have got different names and different principles, but basically all the religions are telling us and giving us the same guidelines.
(24) They are secular in nature.
(25) They tell us that one should help the children, old people, ill and diseased people and also help those who are handicapped.
(26) They believe in charity and that is the reason they have increased the number of beggars in the country.
(27) This believe in listening to religious discourses and that is the reason more and more people are establishing asharams, deras andmaths.
(28) They are superstitious people.
(29) They believe in luck-telling.
(30) They believe in curse and in blessing.
(31) They had been believing in devotion to God and for that purpose they had been leaving this home life and they had been going to jungles, mountains and to lonely places where they had been concentrating and bringing God in their mind and then to their heart.
(32) They have got their own mythology and if we go deep, we shall find that most of the new inventions in science and technology are those which are already in existence in these mythology stories.
(33) If we conduct a survey, we shall find that people of India have got a large number of religious books, religious places and a large number of people who are reciting these religious books.
(34) It must be accepted that this prayer system had been invented by the people of India and they had divided the prayer construction in three parts. In the first part they praise God and His powers. In the second part they thank God for the things already provided to the man by God and in the third part they beg from God and if we go further we shall find the Indians repeating this third part time and again and they are found recalling all their demands thinking that what they had said yesterday, might have been forgotten by God.
(35) They want something before them when they sing religious songs.
(36) They believe that the man should earn through honest means and one should not take bribe, commit crime or misconduct for collecting money. They believe that with this money right type of people would not be brought up.
(37) They share their food with the needy and hungry people.
(38) They celebrate death days of their forefathers and give something in charity believing that these charities shall reach the soul of their parents.
(39) They believe that God should be remembered in the morning when most of the people are still sleeping.
(40) They offer much before the idol they worship and with this money the people running the religious place are maintained.
(41) They believe that social service is a religious cause.
(42) They have got a list of sins and they avoid to commit those sins.
(43) When they give their daughter in marriage, they call this occasion ‘kanya daan’ free gift to the bridegroom.
(44) When one dies they observe a religious day for prayer for the departed soul and they pray that the departed soul should not be compelled to come over to this world time and again. They want salvation for the soul.
(45) If they want a son and son is not coming, they visit religious places and pray for the birth of a son in the house.
(46) Once they have taken a woman as their sister or a mother, they would never have bad relations with such a lady.
(47) They believe in forgiveness and they can avoid punishing a person who has done wrong with them because they believe that this forgiveness process is better than the process of punishing the wrong doer.
(48) They believe that this guest has been sent by God and therefore, they offer all respect to the guest.
(49) In their prayers, they want that all their sins should be condoned.
(50) They promise before God that they shall not be committing the same sins once again.
(51) Now a days there is a competition in India and people belonging to each religion are trying to find out the birth date, the crownation day, the date on which hey died of all the Gods, Godesses, prophats, Gurus and Bhagatas and they have started celebrating these days and they have compelled the state to declare holidays on these days.
(52) They listen to religious discourses, hey perform religious rites and ceremonies and they feel that they have done what they could do for God and they never bother as to whether they have followed any of the principle laid down by those people who were writing these religious books for us.
(53) They do not start a venture till they have offered prayer before God and till they have presented something valuable before the Gods and Godesses.
These are the religious beliefs of the people of India and they have been carrying forward these beliefs even up to date in spite of all these developments in the field of science and technology. If we go deep, we shall note that most of the people in other countries are also following these principles and rehearsals because the Indians are the founders of these points.
