Checklist Of Separation Anxiety Symptoms In Children

Symptoms of anxiety may not be as easy to spot in children as they are in adults because of their ability to interpret what they are feeling. One of the more common types of anxiety children experience is separation anxiety. Different symptoms may occur depending on the situation that initially caused the anxiety and the response received from parents and those they trust.

The symptoms of separation anxiety in children include feeling distressed and usually intensify as night draws near or when a parent leaves for extended periods of time. Separation anxiety is a natural occurrence in childhood; children experience concern when separated from parents, especially their mothers. This kind of anxiety is considered normal behavior up to roughly the age of eight.

If the anxiety persists into adulthood, interfering with the person's ability to function normally it is considered a disorder requiring treatment.  While it is normal in children of small ages, it is abnormal in older people due to the intensity of the emotions involved and the problems exhibited with normal development.

Checklist of symptoms for children's separation anxiety:

  • Stomach ache or a headache rank in the most common symptoms
  • The child may begin having nightmares
  • Panic attacks and tantrums brought about by the knowledge that they are about to be separated from loved ones
  • Refusal to leave the house
  • Clinging to parents and refusing to let the mother or father out of their sight

Possible causes for your child experiencing separation anxiety:

  • When parents get divorced a child
  • When a parent is serving in the armed forces and gets deployed overseas
  • Serious illness or even the death of a parent can cause separation anxiety
  • Major life changes that directly affect the child; going off to school or going to a new school; a change in babysitters or teachers or moving to a new home
  • A life threatening or changing event like a natural disaster

If your child has the typical symptoms of anxiety a simple phone call to your pediatrician may be all you need. Use this checklist to help them understand what has been occurring.  If the problem persists or becomes more severe the solution doesn't need to include medication.  When trying a natural anxiety treatment for your child's anxiety make sure that it is age appropriate.

Some of the natural anxiety treatments available are acupuncture, diet changes, Reiki and advanced relaxation techniques.  But for the method to be successful it needs to be safe, in the case of acupuncture it should be performed by a trained professional.  Advanced relaxation techniques may be appropriate if the child is at an age where they can understand and follow the directions.

The internet is filled with solutions for separation anxiety conditions, but depending on the cause it may be more productive for the parents or guardians to receive anxiety treatment. As always with children nothing can replace the consistent and unconditional love of a parent or loved one.
