Once you find a few advertisements or hear of a few families in need of your sitter services, prepare to call them up. First, however, you need to make sure you are ready to answer their questions. If you seem unprepared, extremely nervous, or are not coherent, the odds of you being hired are very slim. Instead, get over your fears by practicing a possible phone call with a friend or one of your parents. Be ready to tell the people with whom you are applying about your previous work experience, how much time you have done babysitting, any special sitting skills you might have (such as being CPR certified), and what household tasks you are comfortable completing. Would you be able to cook dinner? Are you comfortable taking the children down to the park? These are boundaries you need to establish early on so that there is not confusion later.
Once you have all your answers prepared and you have done a few practice calls with your own parents, you are ready to call the families who advertised for sitters! Just make sure you are friendly, polite, and well spoken. Often, these are the only traits that a parent needs to hear before they invite you over for a real interview. As long as you can prove to them that you are a mature, responsible individual who enjoys spending time with kids, you will be hired! Do not be afraid to respond to a babysitters needed ad; you can earn great spending money by doing so!
