In today’s vernacular, this is when all hell began to break loose. David had sinned, tried to cover it up and repented, but he still had to pay for his sins. God had promised to punish him and this was when it started to get bad for David. David’s son Amnon fell in love with his half sister, Tamar. He wanted his sister so bad that it made him sick. It was obvious to everyone that something was going on.
Amnon’s cousin, Jonadab confronted him about what the problem was and Amnon told him why he was acting so down all the time. Now, a lot of times our relatives mean well, but it is not always a good idea to listen to them. Jonadab came up with a plan to help Amnon get his sister into bed, which Amnon carried out.
Amnon pretended to be sick and asked his father to send his sister to his home to feed him. When she got there ready to feed him, he sent everyone away so that they would be alone and asked her to come into his bedroom. Once he got her there alone he began to attack her. She pleaded for him to stop but he would not. In those days, if a woman was not a virgin, she could not be married, but her future did not matter to him.
If he had truly loved this woman, he would not have put her through this to satisfy his own selfish lust. Once he had raped her, he then began to despise her. It happens the same way today when we commit sexual sins. There is something about these sins that changes something down in our soles. If you love someone, it is best to wait and allow God to bless the union.
David did not punish Amnon. It may have had something to do with the fact that David had committed a similar sin and felt guilty about it, and then again maybe not. Tamar lived her life from that point as a desolate woman in another one of her brother’s homes. This brother, Absalom, had the same mother as Tamar and he wanted to take out revenge on Amnon for what he had done to his sister.
Absalom eventually killed Amnon and went into hiding himself. At this point, David had lost four children, and it all started from being in a place that he should not have been with no one that he was accountable to. One little sin had cost him a whole lot and many years later he was still paying.
