Some say that a child in a school uniform is more likely to take

Schools report that when students dress in "work clothes" rather
than "play clothes" they take a more serious approach to their
studies.
 Promotes Good Discipline:
Many think that school uniforms help maintain school discipline,
decreasing the amount of discipline problems. The argument is
that children today are lacking in self-discipline because
parents refuse to discipline them. This makes it more difficult
on the teacher who has to deal with classes of 25-30 students at
a time.
 Reduces Fighting and Violence:
Schools report that school uniforms decrease fighting and
violence that arrise out of arguments over fashionable clothes.
Children invariably tease those who do not have trendy clothes.
Those who can't afford name brand clothes are often sensitive
about their clothing. Schools struggling with gang problems
report that school uniforms help ease tensions.
 Distractions:
Many parents believe that students wearing school uniforms look
nicer and that a school uniform policy ensures that children
will come to school in appropriate clothing, avoiding
distractions such as fads considered to be outlandish or overly
revealing. Some students have turned school into an unending
fashion show. This disctracts from learning, as some kids spend
more time focused on thier clothes than on homework.

I go to a school that has uniforms, and it SUCKS! Like I can't even walk down the hall without hearing tuck it in, that is not regulation, take it off, these teachers are so annoying. It's like they specialize in being so annoying, so they can tell kids to take off their clothes. It's comments like this that take the focus off learning for me.

Wearing a uniform doesn't mean not being yourself. It just goes to show how unimaginative you are if the only way you can 'express' yourself is by way of clothing. Think of a more productive way to express yourself, say maybe personality, hardwork, academics, athletics, clubs. If identity is based on only what you wear, I think its all the more reason to have uniforms.

It's strange, but some schools cling to their uniform code like the Bill of Rights. At a school i've seen a kid comes to school dressed in a full iut and tie. He looks sharp. A few other kids start doing it to. They look much better then in their kakis and polos, but the anmistration pulls out the code of dress and cuts the fun. 'Ties with strips of non-uniform color are simply not permitted!' Well... as it turns out the siut wearers were the "trouble makers" anyway...

to be honest i wouldnt care if i had school uniforms or not but mostly i'd rather have uniforms because those wanna be ghetto people (yah u know what im talking about) they always try to make fun of you because...lets say ur pants are showing ur ankles they'll laugh at you for that and sometimes you are not able to express yourself even without uniforms because like i said before those judgemental people would make fun of u if u wear something they do not like and wouldn't that make u want to wear something else so they would stop? yah duh...so i'm going with the uniforms and if you still dont agree with me i just have 3 words to say... look at japan...nuff said XD

I really do not get the point of this, because you are clearly missing the most important factor in this issue- freedom of expression.
You really can not force these students to "don these uniforms with pride or respect", because it simply violates them as an individual.

But i have to say im against uniforms. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion and freedom of expression. Expression meaning how you express yourself on what you were.

But this will help with my speech.

I agree completely that there is no evidenceas to how uniforms improve adademic performance or decrease gang violence. AND you don\\\'t save money. Not only do you have to buy uniforms, but what are you going to wear after school and on the weekends? A majority of your life is spent at school, it stifles creativity and individual worth.

i wore a uniform 1st-8th grade and then when i got to high school i no longer had a uniform. Uniforms really can be a good thing. Trust me,people still find ways to express themselves, they just dont do it thorugh colthing. I found that i was less distracted when i went to a school with uniforms because you dont need to look at what everyone else is wearing. Also, it made getting ready in the morning SO much easier.

As for the cost problem, my school always gave you the oportunity to donate your old uniforms that dont fit anymore and then they sell them at a much lower price.

Although some people might disagree, school is something that will determine ur life for good. Although there are many other factors that may have an affect on it, people need to understand that our economy is where it is at because of people that chose to only go halfways. Dressing up for school, in uniforms, teaches good morals and helps people feel better about themselves, rather then wearing torn jeans and sweatpants, which show an underspreciation for anything and everything. Dressing up creates an image that says "I can" it simply turns u into an image of confidence

In New York city, crime rates dropped 14.7 percent after uniforms were instilled. Uniforms help eliminate social and economic boundaries amongst students. They do make a difference!

I feel that uniforms are okay, but within reason. I'm at a school with uniforms, and I feel that a lot of the rules are dumb, including the shirt colors (black,white, gray, and green), the fact that we can't wear navy blue pants, and that we can wear hoodies, but we can't wear sweaters or light jackets. In addition, not all uniforms are cheap. I'm not obese, but I am a big girl (I'm going into 7th grade, and I'm 5'7 and 165 pounds). It is really hard for me to find uniforms that fit me, and when I do, they are super expensive.

it says in the article that they are made with strong and durable cloth. when really having to wash them all the time wears them down. its not like their made of steel.and very few if any school uniforms are made w/ jeans.school uniforms also just make an extra cost for having to go to school.and it says that some kids may not be able to afford name brand clothing because there family dont have the money.well what makes you think that the family will have more money for an extra payment for the uniforms. so really when they dress there own way your not forced to pay a range from30 to 88 dollars.and its not uniforms that make a school unique.if a school wants to be unique they should focus on making there child behave and respect athority.not be focus on what they wear.thats not a teacher/principals place.children are there for learning not being an army soldier.

I think unniforms are a great idea, and I'm homeschooled! I don't agree with those people that say uniforms take away their oportunity to express individuality, there are other ways to do that you know. Your unique personality shouldn't be dampened just by what you wear. Join a club or something and just be yourself! That's where individuality comes from anyway.

My favorite part about the comments are the people that "don't want to think" so they rely on someone elses opinions to write an essay. I agree that uniforms wouldn't do anything to help increase educational motivation, but it might help with distractions. However, students will always find something to "distract" themselves from learning if they don't want to learn. Parens of today need to put more emphasis on education rather than video games, clothes, etc.

our school doesnt have uniforms, so i kinda think it would be cool to have them. but where i work i have to wear one and i really really hate it, so if the school one wasnt as annoying as my work one then it'd be ok. it does save time in the morning getting ready and nobody would get picked on. but also i think school uniforms do cut down on a childs creativity.. i thought it was fun picking out my own clothes whether they were long johns instead of leotards or not haha. clothes is a way that children well and teens express themselves. i like getting new clothes and then wearing them to school, but i dont get new clothes very often.. i have to work for my money and need to save it for university too.

this is pretty bias.First, uniforms dont help with school violence, the uniforms will only deal with the looks but not the violent minds.Some family's might have to by used uniforms,while other students may get top of the line item, thus making socio-economic issues. Uniforms and weekend clothes cost more than the usual amount of clothes that the average student that doesn't wear uniforms. It goes against our freedom of expression and there is no credible evidence that school uniforms improve school discipline or promote higher academic acheivement.

i wish my school had uniforms so it would block out all those emo and gothic people. All you con people said was that self expression and individuality was taken away. you may think you said something else but you just did it in your own way with a twist.
if you think individuality and self expression is taken away then think about this...you are all losers!!!!!! there are other ways to express yourself than by your clothes!!!!!! take a risk and get out there and just talk to someone no matter what they are wearing. if you can't do that and you need them to be wearing designer clothes than take a look at yourself, it's a disgusting image of a bad person.

TRUE STORY PEOPLE…UNIFORMS ARE RIDICULIOUS!
i was pulled out of class for 45 min. the other day because my teacher insisted that my pants where corduroy(they weren’t). but im very easy going so i said whatever and went to the "uniform closet" to get something to wear for the day where i found, not only THE SAME PAIR OF PANTS in al larger size but some ACCTUAL corduroy pants...
the administrators where rude and argumenitive with me, i have had disciplinary issues in the past but nothing recent im am too mature for the childish games being played at my school, i eventually just grabbed some pants and left .Then feet away from the door on my rush back to class i was stopped for my shirt being un-tucked, when i tried to explain how late i was for a test and how i just changed my pants i got the reply "too bad" i had to walk all the way to the office to get my lunch detention. when i finally got back to class the STATE GRADED TEST had already begun. im pretty sure i failed.
basically i think that THAT was a bigger "academic distraction” than my alleged corduroy pants...that no one would have been distracted by...anyone who cant see that shouldn’t be given ANY authority over children

im just angry that even when i show up to class EVRYDAY and i in no way disrespect my teachers i still get taken out of class and written up, this is why I (as well as others) am tempted to drop out but im too *dang smart for that…
I think that there should be some rules regarding attire but this is to the point that the TEACHERS are making school “an ongoing fashion show” …with ridiculous standards at that

I am currently in high school, and although it's a nice thought that school uniforms could fix so many problems in the academic environment, I don't think that clothing enforced by the school would deter so many issues. Furthermore, anything so dramatic introduced into a public school (as most private schools already have uniforms) would certainly incur problems. Personally, I believe that introducing uniforms would be counter productive. Maybe if uniforms were mandatory since a young age it could possibly fix some of these problems.

I've also worn a uniform since Nursery until now in High School. I am doing a project in RE based on an argument over school uniforms. I agree with George. There is hardly any Con's in the article. I've seen 2 of them whilst there's loads of Pro's. If you had more Con's in the article then I would've used them in my project. This is an article not to my expectations and I will find a different site to help me with my homework.

Why do ppl think the only way to express themselves is through clothing? The clothing companies advertise clothes to have certain personality characteristics, so ppl who wish to exemplify themselves buy 'goth clothes', 'punk cloths', 'gangsta clothes' etc...because they think that's the only way to portray themselves. I am a senior in high school and my school uniform colors are royal blue and white(not navy blue,aqua blue,or any other sort of blue unfortunately)You see its real hard to find descent royal blueshirts for girls the guys at my school have it real easy because places like aeropostale,abercrombie and fitch,and even hollister carry royal blue.As for the girls the only places you actually find royal blue shirts are places like academy where the shirts tend to be real wide and hideous and do not fit me properly at all (not to mension when i wear oversized clothing i get small rashes from the loose material rubbing grossly against my very sensitive skin)sure i can wear white but white everyday just is not very fashionable for girls and i really do get tired of wearing white all the time i would really much rather wear my own clothing during school being that its my comfort that matters overall and i know you parents are most likely against it but keep in mind that not everyone dresses like a complete skanks/gangsters.Also how can us students really be our own individual person if we are all dressed alike and look the same.Regarding the whole safety issue the best solution would be wear whatever you want as long as you dont have oversized baggy clothes and one to many pockets

Most people believe that school uniforms suck, but I'd much rather be wearing school uniforms than be judged by how i dress. School is not meant to be a social scene, it is meant to be a place for learning and clothes shouldn't be a part of your education, school uniforms only eliminate the extra stress or worry throughout the day, it helps you concentrate, if you would take your mind off complaining about your uniform and actually pay attention in class. Wearing school uniforms do not take away from your individuality. Most people dress the way they think would create the most attractive look, this doesn't expressing yourself this means you are trying to impress others. Uniforms are not degrading, they do not put you down; unlike in the real world, where you are constantly being humiliated and judged by how you look. What you wear doesn't help you prepare for the real world. People who make you wear school uniforms are out to hurt you they are there to help and create a better learning environment, which is the whole purpose of school.

My school has now introduced a new rule--everyone with their shirt untucked will be sent home. This will cause about 75% of my school to be sent home everyday. Do you not think that this will cause more problems than it solves, and turn perfectly good students into ones that get loads of suspensions??

The problem is that most of the assertions made here are wrong. Uniforms, in fact, cost a great deal more than what middle and lower income parents spend on school clothes - and the uniforms generally aren't suitable for any other purpose because of color, style and design. In addition, research proves that not only do uniforms not solve any disclipline problems, they can and often do cause additional ones. Public school uniforms are a bad idea implemented by lazy thinkers who are unwilling and/or unable to solve the real problems of inclusion, caring and the genuine education of today's students.

By the way, I am not a student, but a parent of four grown children, 2 who had uniforms and 2 who did not.

For people who say that uniforms are worthless and degrade students and not help prepare for the real world, well think again. In the work world, it's likely that you are going to wear a work uniform anyway. And a lot of the kids who think that wearing uniforms doesn't "express" themselves, why can't you guys find a more better way to express your own individual self? And I go to a public school where there are no uniforms, and most of the students are all show-offs and have big egos, cause of their trendy clothing. Well what about other kids? Some people just can't afford designer clothing, and they are mocked, and teased at because of non designer clothing. And why do kids have to wear designer clothing? I mean it's a big waste of money. And what's in style now, will likely not be in style in the future. And if you read any manga, or watch anime, a lot of the girls and guys have nice looking uniforms. I went to three schools, before entering high school, and each had uniforms. I can honestly say that I learned much better and paid more attention when I did wear them. I wasn't as worried about my apperance and what the other kids would think of what I wore, especially since I didn't have as much money as most of them. It saved me a lot of time picking out what to wear in the morning. And to those who say that school uniforms don't prepare us for the real world, most work places have some sort of uniform and they enforce the uniforms just as much, if not more, than schools do. Yes, for some people it actually DOES express their personality by the way they dress.
Wearing oddly colored clothes, with akward accesories.. it can tell alot about someone. Like they obviously don't care what people think about them if they have the guts to dress like this. So then they should be a pretty fun, open minded person.
Some people enjoy to be different for a change instead of just like everybody else.

I notice alot of posts here are from kids who dislike the notion of uniforms. I used to go to public school from K-6th grade and then wore a uniform when I went to private school (7-8th grade). High school was just a strict dress code but not uniforms. I must say that uniforms were more practical because I didn't have to worry about what I had to wear or if I wore the same thing twice. It took the hassle out of figuring out what outfit I had to wear for the day. In todays age, the clothing this generation has to offer is pretty stupid. I see kids and teens wearing pants that fall down to their knees (practically showing all of their underwear). Thong strings sticking out of girls pants. This is the most retarded fashion trend I have ever seen in the 42 years I lived in this planet. As a former teenager myself I remember when I wanted to "fit in" and look cool and "express myself". When I look back it was such a supeficial state of mind I'm embarrassed to admit it today. I'm all for uniforms and if you don't like it then don't go to a school that requires uniforms- problem solved. If your parents insist and you don't have a choice then deal with it. When you become a legal adult you can go ahead and dress in whatever your heart desires or join a nudist colony and be naked for I care.

school uniforms will and always will be a touchy thing for kids... they don't limit who you are as a person though. I could go to my school dressed in uniform and i can still be the creative dork and nerd that i have grown up to be. It's not what you wear that makes you who you are its what you do and how you act. School officials just want their kids to be in a safer environment and they think that uniforms will do that. All in all yes uniforms have ups and downs but every thing schools do have that. The drug searches and lockdowns occur because schools are trying to make it safer. Im a senior in high school and its taken me a long time to see past all the rules and regulations to realize they arent trying to imprison you they are trying to keep you safe. Just look back at what has happened from kids being harassed in schools because of them being less wealthy or a "nerd". Uniforms can set aside differences from each other and provide a safer place for kids to be less bullied...

I went to a catholic school and wore a uniform for 8 years - and I was miserable the entire time. I felt stiffled and controlled. All my classmates complained too. The uniform was so uncomfortable - I hated it. I finally convinced my mom to let me go to a public high school and mercifully she said yes. Once I got there I blossomed. I got much better grades, was more active, creative - and more myself - than I ever was when I had to wear a uniform at that private school. I agree with Randi - it sucks big time!!! Parents: don't do this to your children. Children excell in an environment that gives them the freedom to be themselves. They don't need uniforms that will make them feel controlled. They need to discover their own personality, style, and have dynamic interaction with their fellow students. They need teachers who inspire them - and not feel repressed by a uniform.

I have to say that while school unifroms maybe great and may cause students to focus more on their school work, that it just doesnt seems right, to force a child to put on something that makes them look like a little robot of colorless world. I went to a school that didnt have uniforms and would let students wear what ever they wanted, as long as it covered your body and was deemed decent by the principle. I think they do put limits on imagination, even if it just clothing. It also depends on the atmosphere of the school. A military camp should much rather have them than a public high school.

I think that uniforms sucks. At the school I go to all you hear everyday is tuck in your shirt, cover up your underneath shirt. It wouldn't be so bad if we can wear any kind of collar shirt at my school and not just plain collar shirt. We cant even wear logos!! Uniforms really dosen't help anything. People still fight, bring weapons to school, basically they still do what they want. They just putting on some clothes. Principles act like that putting on a new personality or something. I think that school uniforms can be both good and bad. At times i think they suck, but then when i think about it it's not all that bad there is a specific reason, one reason is that even when we didn't have uniforms even then people would get in trouble for not following school regulations. Most students would get in trouble for having too tight of pants or too short of skirts or pants needed to be pulled up, because they were sagging. Most of the time I think its a good idea that we have uniforms so that in that way we wouldn't have to worry about what we were going to get yelled at about what we are wearing.!!

Children should have the right to free expresion, you can't take away their individuality. If you look at someone, usually you can tel what kind of person they are. Just for people wondering, I am a Highschool student. And im pretty sure 70-80% of the commenters that are against school uniforms are people who have good paying careers or come from double income families. Not everyone has these things. the thing is with uniforms is (at least mine) is that it is uncomfortable the way that you have to wear it. by itself i understand but having to do things such as tucking in shirts and doing up top buttons and not rolling up sleeves especially on hot days make you feel hot and stressed emotions intensified by constantly looking over your shoulder incase you get detentions. uniform can be there but without any flexibilty it creates a resentment to the school which decreases behaviour and school spirit.

In my opinion school uniforms would greatly help my school.
From all my research and academic studies, I have come to conclude that schools with school uniforms have a better grade point average then schools with out them and there is less pear pressure to dress like other students.
I know from a kid’s point of view that the school uniforms would be boring and mundane, but from an adult’s perspective the uniforms would be a “good way to show school spirit” and “a better way to take stress off the kids.

I think school uniforms are a bad idea. children need to express themselves, and an easy way to do that is by dressing in "their style" of clothing. I would just like to say that I have worn a school uniform and it was easy, saved me time and energy, they were comfortable, and most importantly no one got judged on what they looked like or what designer they had on. I see that a lot of people that are against school uniforms have never worn them and assume that they are uncomfortable and fail at allowing self expression. Firstly, if you have never worn one, how do you know? Secondly, I wore a uniform for 12 years and never felt uncomfortable physically or emotionally. Thirdly, wearing a uniform to school made the times when I needed to actually get dressed special. I never needed clothing or designer this and that to express myself. Instead I found other ways to express myself. Also, just because you wear a school uniform does not mean that you can't wear thye jewlery you want,the nail polish you like, or do your hair the way you like. Your not confined...it was simply a way to make things easier on us. Talk about issues with self-image and consumption...with a uniform, you buy it once and how can you be insecure with a uniform and how can anyone judge you based on dress if everyone is wearing the same thing.

I think that uniforms would be great, but not ones that require you to wear your own clothing, but only certain colors! like if you had to wear white or black shirts, and blue pants. haha, just for example. i think they should have a few different choices for you. I would definitly consider school uniforms. They encourage you to dress successful.
They aren't as expensive as a weekly outfit would be. Who says you have to express your
individuality at school? If expressing your individuality is that big of a deal to you, why not buy your trendy clothes as well and express yourself at partys, concerts, the movies, going out to eat.. etc. You go to school to learn and better your education for the future, not to worry about how you look towards other people. I dont see a problem in school uniforms whatsoever. If anything, they're helping you concentrate on your education, rather than expressing yourself the whole day.

Some great points made by people for uniforms. I agree with wearing uniforms to a certain extent. At my school and others in S.A. ,we pretty much wear suits and ties- the whole blazer ,tie and smart shoes thing. But, uniforms are so uncomfortable! Screw individuality! Come on people who the hell would wear stiff leather shoes and blazers to go and learn? I say fine, lets have uniforms, but its the 21st century and we can at least wear comfortable cloths like golf/t-shirts with any pants of uniform colour for eg. Golf shirts with the school emblem and black whatever - skirts, shorts, pants etc... That way theres no competition, people can be more individualistic and the schools are happy. Thats all folks!

I think that school uniforms should be implimented in all American schools, just like they are in Europe and Asia, where the schools are absolutely TRUMPING American students. If the kids at school spent less time on their outfits, and more time on their homework, our country might actually be better spoken and able to compete with England and France in math.

In a recent study, the same test was given to students in Sweden and students in America. 87% of the Swedish highschoolers (which wear uniforms) scored an 80% or better on the test, while the American students, (from a wealthy California public school area) had a pass rate of only 21%.

Children in America need to take school more seriously, and being able to wear whatever you want is only a distraction.

Uniforms are a pretty good idea, but the uniforms at my school are just crappy. They are too casual, and its more like a dress code then a uniform. Then finding things like jumpers that fit within the dress code is tricky, unless you want to wear the school massive, unflattering slopey joe as your jumper, and its annoying finding black pants and shirts that fit me well, because I'm little. I look so prepubescent!! Plus, since the school's uniform has become so..varied, people tend to bring in the designer jackets etc. And even though I don't give a flying crap about price tags, its still annoying finding nice looking clothes within the dress code and price range. Oh well. It would be so cool to have a stricter uniform. One thats not just plain DAGGY! I like to feel confident that I look okay!

Personally i think uniforms are a good idea. Honestly, it saves time in the mornings or nights not having to pick clothes to wear, it means that kids wont be judged on the price of the clothes they wear because its all the same, and because chances are in most jobs you will get, there will be some form of uniform or dress code, so school are preparing their children for the inevitable future.

Also, i agree with the fact that clothes doesn't stunt a persons individuality. Clothes most the time only mirrors the income of the person or family wearing the clothes. Individuality comes from personality, and decisions a person makes.

I would much rather have school uniform! Imagine, getting up every morning and having to decide what to wear just to impress peers. At my elementary school we wore uniforms, but every Friday was free dress day. My school never fought about clothes. Actually we complimented each other on them! Everyone was all, OMG, where'd you get that!? And white uniform tights rip to much. Especially, when your in elementary and your a kid so you go to recess in elementary. And they are overheating. and really people say how fat you look in them. And there's no law saying you have to wear what someone order's you to. And jeans and a t-shirt are comfortable they help you concentrate, because you feel confident that you look okay. And who REALLY thinks about going shopping instead of school. But there is more to life than school. Have fun sometimes! If you don't your waisting the youngest happiest years of your life when there are no bills! No one wants to be the same. I read a lot of arguments here that schools uniforms are stifling and prevent individuality etc. But I find all these assertions to be petty excuses at best from people who really have no idea what a school uniform is like. They often perceive it to be some "bane" on students when in fact it is quite the opposite.
I have gone to schools which had uniforms and those that didnt have any uniforms. I have found that schools which didnt have uniforms had less discipline and less enthusiastic about school. A school uniform is if nothing else a symbol of belonging and of the sanctity of the institution. Uniformity in dress also is a huge stress relief from peer pressure about fashion and shoes etc. Also, it instills a sense of collective spirit when you deal with students of other schools.
The argument that "individuality" is curbed or that it stifles students is utter nonsense as scholastically, schools with uniforms have students who perform better on an average than schools without uniforms, also some of the greatest minds in human history have been products of schools with uniforms like Issac Newton etc. Compare any military school to any public school in the US and the difference between their graduates is clear to see.
Let us not forget the uniform is not a solution to all kind of problems but it is definitely a step in the right direction.

I can affirm the positive benefits cited for school uniform use; we have a family policy that our children must wear uniform-type clothing (whether or not their schools require it) because of the positive messages about the student this attire sends. First off let me correct the ignorant comment made about so-called ghetto people; It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know you are not wear clothes that doesn't fit you and uniform pants can be highwaters also. Uniforms does looks nice but people have others clothes that looks better. For everbody that are for uniforms you need to ask yourself "How are prisoners identified" through their prison jumpsuits(uniforms), "could it just be another way for the school to keep tabs on kids", "why is so wrong for kids to wear what they want to wear", people can identify what school your child goes to by the colors of the uniforms and that will make it extremely hard to keeps someone away from your child that you might nit want near your child, makes it easier for child abduction. The school administrators act like drill sergeants towards students in uniforms. How does it improve academics when and if a students shirt accidently come untucked the can get sent home from school. A teacher went as far as sending my niece to the office all because of the color of her bra and she was in uniform. So don't sit up here and tell me that uniforms is the best options for students. It will not help them succeed in life. School does not teach success it only teaches kids how to get a job. Success is in one's heart and mind no one can tell a person how to succeed. It is people out here with 3 and 4 degrees and still choose to work in places that barely pays minimum wage. Teachers are not in uniforms does that make them unsuccessful? They have degrees and barely get paid anything so how can you tell students how to be successful.Clothes doesn't make the person and uniforms doesn't neither. Those are nots schools; they are penitentiaries. That's what they became when they threw in THE UNIFORM POLICY!

I have to wear a uniform everyday and I very much dislike it along with just about everyone else that I work with. Im in the Army. People even look up to me when I wear the uniform though im out of it as soon as possible. As an adolescent/teenager being the very rebellious stubborn person am/was I know I would have tons of problems with it. I dont think we should make kids wear uniforms because of many reason, we should let them wear what they want because this is America. We are all different, we come from different places and so on; if a kid gets in a fight, has discipline problems, thinks he/she is better or whatever argument you want to throw out there BEAT EM, no just kidding. On the serious just let this one go; people will break rules regardless, lets not put more rules so there are more things for kids to stress about or rebel against.

From a kid's point of view, uniforms are boring and mundane. But, from a totally adult perspective, uniforms are great. It works both ways. This article was a great one to cite for my persuasive essay, so thank you, Isaac Grauke.

I think school uniforms should be mandatory in all schools. I went to school in the 80's and remember how everyone was judged by how they dressed. It's still just as bad today. I would be willing to bet school uniforms will not catch on in the US because giant corporations like Nike, Ralf Lauren, Izod, New Balance, etc. won't allow that to happen. They want to sell their overpriced junk to stupid kids that want to be trendy and they will pay off state legislatures to not require uniforms. So there will continue to be social class conflicts in school because some kids won't have $150 for a pair of Nikes made in some Chinese sweat shop.

Well, like most everyone else who commented, I am against uniforms. I think the idea is just silly. I go to a small school;everyone knows everyone, and I don't think making us kids look and dress the same would improve test scores or learn to accept others .. at all. Uniforms are pricy, and large families would have trouble paying for it all. Now I'm not saying uniforms are bad, I just wouldn't enjoy looking like everyone else. I'm kinda different in the way I express myself. I'm not Emo, I'm not Goth, I'm not Scene, and I think its rediculous that schools think that if they enforce a dress code, that all their problems with discrimination and gangs and cliques would be gone. They are sadly mistaken. I think that no matter your age, you should express yourself how you want to, not how the school wants you to. Now, I'm not trying to imply that how you dress is the only way you can express yourself. Join some clubs, do some extracurricular work or something of that nature. There are millions of way to do that, but, how you dress is a major one. Because many many people go against the saaying "don't judge a book by its cover."

Clothes that are a size bigger than I am feel comfortable on me, but I have to wear clothes that are just the right size, and they feel SOOO uncomfortable. Plus, they always made my back itch. As a retired teacher of some 42 years I probably know a little about this topic from experience. The biggest argument for the retension of school uniforms lies not so much with the child but with the attitude of the teacher toward individual students.
Believe it or not teachers are human as well as social workers and carpenters and cannot help but be influenced by the appearance of their students. It is an obvious truth that teachers will spend more time with those students who are well dressed than those who are scruffy or dirty. A uniform goes some distance to reducing that perception and therefor results in a more equitable distribution of the teacher's attention. Ask any teacher!

I am from Alabama and in my English class we are doing a reprot on if we are for of aginest school unifroms. At the begining was toltaly aginest them but now that i have done a good bit of reasearch i am going more tored them.
Some kids think that it would be ugly and boring looking but we as students cccan change this we can try our hardest to get newer styles.
i know that the girls are not going to be for thhe blazers and the boys for the suits so lets make a change and show the bord that there are other things out there that are not really that nuch money.

ok first off all I'v been wearing school uniforms my whole life and let me tell you their not fun. First of all they do take away your rights. You wouldnt like no one telling you what you have to wear. Our school requires us to wear white or black shirt and khaki pants. Our shirts have to be tuck in and we have to wear a black or brown belt. We can't even wear different color socks. Were not allow to wear heel less shoes or heels. We cant even wear jackets that are red, orange; they have to be a solid black or white. To me i do think we should at least loosen up on some of the rules.

However, things like more dicipline because of uniforms is definitely not true, you cannot change a childs peronsality by changing their clothes. Also, I've seen some comments saying clothes is not the only way you express youself, however, it may not be the only way but it is a very important one. If a child is shy how do they express themself? There's just about no way but by the clothes they wear, and there is also the rebels who will not like school uniforms very much. what about the factor that school uniforms are also seen as sexist? I know that some schools provide pants as an option, but some don't. luckily, I never had the pleasure of wearing a uniform to school, but from what I hear from those who did, they felt subconscious and uncomfortable wearing a gender based uniform, especially during that age.
Also, I noticed in the paragraph marked as "Professional" that you put "just like dad dresses up to go to work." I hope you do realize that there is a plentiful number of working moms....

i am doing a debate in my logic class... and i am affirming school uniforms... i go to a school and we have uniforms. they are such a great equalizer between the less wealthy and the wealthier. Also, it reduces cliques and helps students resist peer pressure. If you are worried about being able to express yourself clothing isnt the only way! They encourage discipline. Uniforms also save time, reduce stress, and that look very neat and well organized.... i like wearing normal cute clothes but uniforms can be a very good thing and i am totally for them! :]

I've been in private school all my life, so this year i tried someting different. I went to public school and my grades went up higher than at my old school. I also noticed that the Honor roll percentage increased. Im not sure if it is uniforms, but it had a part in it.

now they are deciding to put uniforms at our school. our school is jointed with a high school and my friend take band at the high school because boths schools have the same music teacher. if she has a target on her back most likely the high schoolers will take aim and try to shoot.

i have to say having uniforms suck too because the problem is, is it the dress code. or is it because the teachers arnt enforcing it.

what about the idea of school uniforms being perceived as sexist? I realize that some schools let females wear pants, but that's not always an option. I, luckily, never had the opportunity to wear a uniform at my schools, but I know others that have, and they felt subconscious and uncomfortable having to wear a gender specific uniform.

i am a high school right now and our new principal wants to inforce uniforms. Ever since he came to our school kids have been acting up more. I think uniforms would just bring more violence to the school. I hear kids saying all the time that they feel that our school is like a prison. I mean how are we suppose to feel a police office in our school, frequent drug searches, lockdowns because they are searching for drugs, not allowed to leave the school without a pass from the principal.... Uniforms would just makes us even more mad, im ok with all the drug searches and stuff but uniforms is going to far. Most kids would probably just give up in school all together because they feel that they are being punished to wear uniforms for something they never did. If we were forced to wear uniforms we would not be able to express out creativity or indiviualism. I thought teachers and parents wanted us to be different from others not follow in others steps. you cant do that if you are forced to be the school, you would be like zombies walking around the school. we have almost 2000 kids in our school and your telling me that those kids would be ok with uniforms i dont think so. Half of the kids in our school signed at petition for taking our music programs away i would think almost all the kids would be opposed to uniforms.

well if uniforms were supposed to be so positively influential,
shouldn't the schools with uniforms be all great?
uniforms don't change the personalities/characteristics of the students.
they don't reduce school violence, or raise school spirit.
it's not like asian schools are all safe from school violence, or filled with hardworking students.
they are who they are. kids who fight will fight, kids who study will study.
uniforms are not the key element for disciplining or changing the attitudes of the students.

Even though I am against uniforms, i feel that I have to let you know this: If you think that clothing is the only way to express yourself, then you have nothing worth expressing. If clothing is the only way you think you can tell the world about you, then the world doesn't care. Yoou should try to express yourself through your words and actions. Clothing only lasts until you grow out of it. Wors last a lifetime.

Dress codes are in my school, but people still break the rules. With actual uniforms, ths wont happen. I always have a fear that i will be made fun of by certain clothes. But with uniforms, this wouldnt happen.

Even students are protected by the 1st Amendment of the Bill of Rights, so what's the deal with schools enforcing many unearthing rules on their way of dress? School Uniforms would be the biggest stab in their freedom of expression. This article kind of seems like it favors the pros, like there wasn't much research done on the cons, but it is useful though.

i have had to wear a uniform for about half of mychooling and they f**king SUCK!!! the first uniform i had waz i had to wear a dress coat, white dress shirt, dress pants, belt, dress shoes, and a tie, and that was in KINDERGARDEN!!!!!!!!!! now i have to wear a grey shirt with the school name on it, blue pants, crew socks (dont ask why) a belt and all white shoes. i also have to wear a nametag(as if my teachers dont know my name)and have my shirt tucked in all the time or i get a demerit (again) when i havent worn a uniform, i have done just as well, if not better, in school. uniforms surve no purpose but to make you look like a geek. one of the reasons i hate my school is that it has a uniform. they serve NO purpose and suck AND theyre EXTREMELY expensive (at least my school's is) and you can still tell who's rich and who's not as rich

I don't know about any of you, but when I go to school the teachers always try and remind us school is a fun safe learning environment. But I've been reading articles that are for some reason saying otherwise. They claim that school is a serious professional blah blah blah. I thought school was supposed to be educational and fun. Not boring and uneventful. As for school spirit, I show mine at pep rallies etc. That would be what they are for? Of course I could be wrong they could be used to raise money for the pet dinosaur living in the janitors office. Honestly this shouldn't be such a big problem. School uniforms are a NO. With a big N and a big O. Reduce crime and improve grades? Unlikely since when do you hear of gangs in schools, beating on kids because they wear their pants hanging on the right side and not the left. "Yo this dawg aint got his shirt tucked in, let's get'um" Bug off this is a damn lie. Right from the get-go. Anyways, that's my opinion.

well i honestly think that school uniforms aren't that bad, for they do stand for something. example: military, rotc, jrotc. people in the military have to wear uniforms and they show their pride in them. they show unity in how and when to wear the uniforms. as for me, i am in rotc and i do have to wear the uniform. i take pride in it because i think to myself that somewhere out there in the war or the retired servicemen wore this uniform to show something. as for the scool uniforms, its the same thing. you wear to show your unity. your pride in something to show you are a part of one place

School uniforms are both good and bad. Bad, because kids don't get to express their individuality, uniforms are expensive when you also have to buy "bang up" clothes for home, and school is where you unleash your creativity. Good, because the school would be unified as a community, gang dress would not be permitted, and kids who were poor or could not afford the "newest and coolest" brand names would not be ashamed.
