The important thing to remember when we’re stretching our ability to live a joyful life is that emotional upheaval will happen at some time or another. This is a given.
At those times, we realize at a deep unconscious level that we truly don’t need to keep ourselves safe by shrinking from the expression of our inner genius. We learn that safety actually comes more from expressing ourselves than anything else.
This is the transition that we all go through. Trusting in our unique gifts and our purpose often seems foolish. After all, we have to pay the bills, we want to look respectable and reasonable to others, and we certainly don’t want to fail publicly. There is a lot of risk to following our bliss, or so it seems to our safety mechanism.
Being caught between creating the life of our dreams and the limits of our emotional safety mechanism, doesn’t feel good. Remember, we’ve probably just expanded our ability to express ourselves and then, like a recoiling spring, our safety mechanism snaps us back to what it thinks is a more secure way of living.
This can come in many forms. In my experience, however, the usual blocks to expressing our inner genius are as follows:
Inner Genius Block #1 - Shaming/Self-berating thoughts – This is a specific kind of thinking, beyond just the usual negative thoughts that might wander through our head at any given time throughout the day. These thoughts are about attacking ourselves, making us feel unworthy, stupid, and ashamed.
When we think this way, our thoughts are aimed at us abandoning anything that is unfamiliar. That is all. The assessments aren’t true and they aren’t even accurate. These negative thoughts certainly won’t bring up how many times you’ve succeeded in doing something you love, or how many risks you’ve taken that have turned out for the best. This voice is like a negative child that is scared. This voice will say anything to get you to turn back.
Inner Genius Block #2 - Panic! – When I don’t buy in to the negative, shaming thoughts, I can feel incredible fear. When I really sit down and concentrate on what I’m feeling, I can actually tell that my fear isn’t “about” anything. I’m not afraid of any particular thing. I’m just afraid. If I can sit with the fear and just feel it as a raw emotion, it usually leaves fairly quickly, within ten minutes or less.
Inner Genius Block #3 - Stupor – This is the last attack of the safety mechanism and the most insidious. It is like we just go to sleep. We’ll continue to go about our day, but without great focus. We may even be highly functional about getting things done. Everything will look good on the surface.
But we’ll know the difference. We won’t have a spring in our step and life gets dull.
When this happens, the best thing that we can do is get inspired. Inspiration is the biggest enemy of a stupor. The moment we get inspired, we get that inner energy back. And we’re on our way to aliveness again.

How I Deal With Blocks to Living My Life’s Purpose

The problem is that when we’re acquiring a new skill, such as using our unique talents and living our life’s purpose, we’re vulnerable, moving in uncharted territory. Having emotional upheaval just makes things worse. Here is what I've found that helps.
