To be but how to be

One quality which each one of us shares with all others, even in this age of distrust and desperation, is a zealous love for life.  Whether we accept it or not, it is true that all of us still savor life.  Even if every sunrise does not bring that proverbial ray of hope for us we still wait for it through the night, and continue to do during the next … and the next one as well.  Is it not a paradox that most of us who proclaim this world to be unlivable still we continue living in it and that too after making every effort to make life in it worthwhile, if only for our own selves?  If only these efforts were made keeping others in mind as well, this world may have actually become livable for the whole society at large.

The goodness of the human heart has not vanished completely.  It has merely got obscured behind haze of confused aims that we sometimes set for ourselves.  We do not want to clear that fog because we feel that the wakening of that goodness within us would make us uncomfortable.  We carry this guilt of our own flawed attitude in our hearts throughout our lives.  I believe that this is no mean burden.  Paradoxically, it is a burden which we are not willing to shed off our shoulders merely because it will involve some turbulence in our lives, albeit just once and for the better!  Yet some Atlases amongst us do manage the proverbial shrug.  They are just one of us but they have the courage to shake themselves up to a dawn of vivid and pristine aims of life. They do not ignore the voice of their conscience and do what we always secretly longed to, but could not due to the pressures created by pedestrian issues of daily existence. Our concealed admiration for them reveals our latent and suppressed ability to emulate their example.

As the human mass multiplies on this earth, I feel that the number of such towering personalities is steadily diminishing.  Perhaps that is why when this generation looking up in search of its heroes, it is unable to find them.  The void created by the absence of such shining luminaries in every field, creates confusion in its minds.  Of course, on the grassy meadows of human perception not everyone is capable of carving a path for himself.   We look for a well trodden path that assures us a safe and uneventful arrival at our destination. Today the footprints are fading on the sands of time so it is really difficult to make our life sublime.  Let us try to create footprints of our own.  They may be light and may fade fast, but they will signify our ability to take the path less travelled.  The Shakespearean question today is perhaps not "To be, or not to be" but "To be, but how to be"?

"The light of memory, or rather the light that memory lends to things, is the palest light of all... I am not quite sure whether i am dreaming or remembering, whether i have lived my life or dreamed it. Just as dreams do, memory makes me profoundly aware of the unreality, the evanescence of the world, a fleeting image in the moving water."

the aricle describes the need to have a bridge of emotional, social and moral communication between consecutive generations. Responsibility lies with the older generation to not only build this bridge, but to travel on it also. There are various factors which give rise to a clash of ideas; such as societal shifts, individualistic approach, parental dreams, changing values, peer group pressure etc. Adaptability and an interactive approach can only provide a possible solution.
