It may so happen that at least once in life you might have faced or you might face a situation of a car accident in which you are involved or you may just be a passer by. Normally what should you do in such situations? If you are the offender, do you run away from the spot or see to it that you take the victim to the hospital? In case you are a passer by do you just see the proceedings or do you jump in action? What to do at the accident scene is the crux of the topic today.
Utter shock in the first few seconds of the accident is a normal thing that is faced by everyone at the accident scene. In case you are the driver behind the wheel then it is your duty to administer first aid to the victim at the accident spot. If the victim is seriously injured then you should take the victim straight to the hospital and take care of his treatment. Try to stay calm as far as possible. Tell the whole story to the police. Also it is important to file an accident report with the police at the spot of the accident. Do not leave the accident scene unless you file an accident report. Also it is important to limit your discussion of the accident with the police. Try not to straightaway admit any fault or liability on your part. Make sure that you contact your insurance agent immediately after the accident. Keep all the necessary documents like insurance policy certificate, car registration papers, etc ready. Informing the insurance agency on time can save you a lot of repair costs.
If the accident has taken place with another car, then both of you i.e. you and the owner of another car should pull off at the side of the road and settle the matter with the police. Do not fight amongst yourselves in between the road and obstruct vehicular traffic. In case you are just a passerby then also it becomes your responsibility to assist the injured. Do anything you can within your capacity like calling for other assistance and also dialing emergency numbers. Do assist the police in anyway you can by providing accurate information about what you have witnessed at the accident scene.
In many cases, accidents do not require police notification. Only accidents involving injury or death or damage in excess of $500 require police notification. In case an accident is small and involves no injury, then the parties can agree to a settlement on their own terms. In case you are involved in an accident with another car, then you are required to note down all relevant information about the other driver including his license details. You are required to submit this information to the investigation officer. With the exception of a few vital details required by the investigation officer, do not reveal more information than required. Do not admit that you were wrong or careless or it was your fault. Such admissions may turn out to be costly to you. You can admit your fault only when the facts show that you were wrong. You are required to leave the accident scene only when the injured is assisted and when you have obtained all the information from the driver and also provided all your information to the investigating officer. Seek the officer's permission before you leave. If you are injured even in a small way then it is prudent to see the doctor as internal injuries are known to aggravate later on. In case your car is damaged, do not forget to call an insurance agent and complete all the formalities on time so that you can get your claim.

I was hit from the left back side after entering a left turn indent which widens out to a two lane left turn. Other driver was attempting to come around my left to enter the inside left turn lane up ahead. The police report (other driver's comment) says I had made an unsafe left turn as I was not as close as practicable to center double yellow stripe. My question is, was I in a one lane area or two? It is widening out to two lanes, but is not yet marked as such for 30 feet beyond point of impact.
