It was his meeting with Kade Weston, a defensive tackle Red Bank Regional High that changed his life forever. He signed with Georgia and invited his friend to his school. So in spring of '06 Knowshon Moreno took a train south, he never knew that his life would never remain the same. "It was a ride to Georgia, he fell in love with the school straight away and he knew that it was the place for him. Since then there has been no looking back for Moreno.
Georgia had a very disappointing season this time around. After topping the consensus preseason they only managed to finish the regular season 9-3. The Bulldogs will be facing Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl. Moreno is leading the SEC in rushing with 1,395 yards (116.3 per game, which is 13th best in the country) which is makes him only the second player in Georgia history to run for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, the other player being Herschel Walker. Moreno is a finalist for the Doak Walker Award given to the nation's top running back. Moreno is the third highest in the nation in rushing yards per game behind Iowa's Shonn Green(144.1) and UConn's Donald Brown (153.7).
But a more pertinent and a pondering question doing the rounds in Athens these days is - Will Moreno, a redshirt sophomore, declare for the NFL draft after the Capital One Bowl? Most of the pros think that he is too good and can easily be picked for the top 15 picks. At 5-foot-11, 207 pounds, Moreno possess 4.4 40 speed, the power of a linebacker and is virtually in-tackle-able. He is probably on of the best in the history of Georgia. He has all the qualities to make it to the next level. But if he stays for his junior year, Moreno will finally be behind an experienced offensive line this season the Bulldogs didn't have a regular starter older than a sophomore and he'll be a preseason Heisman frontrunner. But the lure of the NFL is and will be strong.
If he decides to go pro, the fans will surely miss him. They simply love him and respect him for the efforts that he put on the field. He is the best tailback after Walker's '82 Heisman season. Where ever he shows up he is mobbed by fans for autographs, pictures, handshakes or for just a glimpse of their local hero. His No. 24 jersey is one of the best selling apparels at the campus book store. Recently, fans of the Bulldogs launched a website "DontGoDawgs". Through this they are asking him to stay for one more season and play for Georgia.
Not only the fans but Georgia coach also thinks that he is his best student. "He doesn't have a weakness. He'll eventually have a decision to make, but if he comes back it'll be exciting to see what he could do behind a line that has more experience." says Mark Richt.
So definitely he has a very tough decision to make, but considering the game he is playing and the form he is in, it is just a matter of time when he has to take a call on it. Whatever his decision is, we are sure of some great football and more landmarks from this Bulldog.
