There are two ways you can make money as an affiliate marketer. You can sell products yourself and earn commissions, or you can recruit affiliates and earn commissions off of their sales.

If you are familiar with compensation plans in network marketing you understand the value of duplication. Network marketing has always allowed distributors to build a down line of people underneath them and earn money on their efforts.
Many groups allow you to go several levels deep and get paid whenever they purchased or sold a product. With affiliate marketing the programs are either single tier or two tier programs.
A 2 tier program means that you can recruit affiliates directly on your first level and earn money every time they make a sale. You will not earn any money on the sales of products by affiliates that they recruit. Therefore it is worth it to spend your time personally recruiting as well as retailing affiliate products.
Two tier affiliate programs work great for Internet marketers who like to network with other affiliates. You can work together and be compensated for spending your time teaching them how to build an affiliate marketing business of their own.
