If you have already chosen an affiliate network that offers the type of products that you want to promote as part of your affiliate marketing business, you now need to choose a product advertising program. Programs are put on the network by advertisers looking for affiliate marketers to promote and help sell their products.
Basically an affiliate marketer is a person who promotes and helps sell an advertiser’s product. When a sale of the product occurs through the affiliate’s effort they get paid a percentage of the sales price or a set amount depending on the advertiser. This is known as Pay Per Sale compensation.
There are other ways an affiliate marketer can be paid such Pay Per Click which means a potential buyer is referred to the advertiser’s site at which point the affiliate has earned a commission even if there isn’t a sale.
Pay Per Action is another way that an affiliate can be paid. This is when a prospect is referred to the advertiser’s site and performs a specific action such as filling out a form. There are a number of variations and combinations of these pay plans depending on the advertiser.
Now that you have decided on a network and a compensation plan it’s time to choose a good affiliate program to promote. Below you will find 5 tips that will help you find the right one.
1. You will usually have the most success with a program that’s selling something you have an interest in. If you're interested in buying the product yourself then this would likely be a good program for you to promote. There are a number of free products that can help you zero in on a product that people are already interested in and are buying.
2. It’s a good idea to stick with a high quality program and advertiser that is connected to some experts in the field. If the experts are promoting it or at least talking favorably about the product then it will probably be one you can choose to promote. This is especially true when first starting out. Pick ones that you'll be proud to promote.
3. You should do a lot of research before you decide on a product or advertiser. Make sure you pick real and worthwhile ones. If possible try to find out more about the advertisers as they are more important than the product. Try to talk to some of the customers and even the advertisers if they aren’t a known company or person. Again check the forums to see what people are saying about the overall program.
4. Pick a program that's geared toward a target market that appears to be growing. This will insure you have future customers for other products you find to promote. Join some forums that cater to your product to get an idea of what’s happening in the industry.
5. You want a program that pays a fair commission for the work you have to do to earn it. Some of the digital programs pay up to 75% while the merchant programs are more like 5% to 15%. You will have to do some studying because while a program may pay 75% this may be on a 30 dollar product while one paying 5% may be on a product that will sell for $1,000 or one that might pay you every time the product is ordered. Be sure to carefully research the compensation plan before deciding what product will be the best to promote.
By following these tips you should have no problem in picking a good adverting program to promote. These tips are not going to be the only ones you should be aware of when picking a advertising program but they will keep you on the right track and give you a good basis for researching potential advertisers.
