Commercialization on the web has taken a huge leap with thousands of web site owners joining hands with the advertisers. Online promotions is at an all time high and is enjoying the bounty of the business. Previously, advertising, marketing and promotions were considered as the prerogatives of the field marketing force and advertising agencies which used to engage the customers either directly or using popular media channels like radio, television and magazines. With Internet on the scene and web sites as the platform, many practices are facing alternatives.

Affiliate marketing is one such practice that has given the on-the-field marketers a hard time. Manufacturing and brand selling companies have started trusting the web site owners to promote and sell their products online. This fact is clear from the budget spending for various promotions by the companies all over the world. Some mainstream channels, though they continue to take major share, but affiliates are also demanding and in fact receiving good attention.

Affiliate marketing, as it is a new practice, much of it has been experimental. Moreover, the experiments have been mostly successful, giving it the credibility and the acceptance in the markets.

In affiliate marketing the advertiser pay for any given task like advertising, lead generation or selling. Therefore, it is more results oriented and concrete compared to our popular marketing. This alternative marketing method is often initiated by either the advertiser (brand manufacturer) or the affiliate network. By providing online affiliate programs, the advertisers assign several tasks which have to be completed by the site owner.

Online affiliate marketing has given the advertisers an effective and less expensive tool to successfully sell in the market. Many affiliates have outperformed and even done better than the field sales teams. Because of the low cost and guaranteed returns, advertisers have found it providential.

Affiliate channels are now being supported and helped by web developers who are integrating and developing new components to increase the efficacy of online affiliate marketing. So far, emphasis has been on the development of interactive platforms and online creatives. There is a lot expected to be coming in the next few years.
