Definitions and Overview:
An affiliate is a business group or just one person who does the marketing and promotion for another group or person. Online affiliates are basically website owners who allow online buying of merchants’ products on their own (affiliate’s website). It has been found that merchants themselves have commercial websites and portals on which online purchasing is carried over.
Origin:
There is no precise date recorded when we can say the practice originated. In the heydays of radio broadcasting, especially in N America, popular radio networks were short of time slots as there used to be numerous radio programs in the pipeline. These networks, in order to reach out for more people, delegated some tasks like transmission of certain programs to local radio stations. These were the first affiliates, literally speaking, and were unlike business partners. By engaging the affiliates the networks expanded their businesses and in turn the small, local radio stations were able to generate revenue. Decades later the concept was borrowed from the broadcasting medium by online merchants and vendors. Like small, local radio stations, numerous websites were available to carry out the tasks of these merchants and today the trend has gained an immense importance and is turning out to be a discipline in itself.
Online affiliates, merchants and revenue generation: Prior to the joining as affiliates website owners had limited options to make money. Online advertising was still being pursued but the tools and techniques were meager. At that point some e-commerce geniuses hit upon the idea and started delegating some business tasks to other website owners.
This is how business is done –
A merchant is closely associated with some production unit or services company. The merchant takes products and services directly from the one providing it and then sells it online. This saves the distribution cost for manufacturing company as the products goes directly from production unit to the customer who purchases it from the merchant’s site. A merchant indeed gets the product at lower prices – the factory price but then audience has to be made aware of the extra money they pay to wholesalers, transportation and distribution personnel and finally retailers.
Over the course of time merchants want to expand their business but starting a new commercial website or portal takes much effort and time. Therefore they approach other website owners, the affiliates and use their resources. Affiliates normally allow marketing as well as sales tasks on their websites. The profit made is shared by the merchant and affiliate.

In this section we will see how affiliates can make money by just working from home. It all begins with a web resource such as website. If you already have one fifty per cent job is done. But if you don’t it is still alright as you can make a customized one. Once you have a website you go for promotions till the time there is enough traffic on your website. With the help of some analysis tools and software you can monitor every action that takes place on your website. After that you send requisitions to e-commerce portals or websites and tell them you are interested in becoming an affiliate. The merchants or owners of the portals will review your website and you may get the deal. The golden rule to get the deal is enough traffic and popularity. The commissions will be fixed by you and the merchants for any sales generated and paid to you. And the best part is that all of it can be done from your own apartment room or home.
