Find A Niche And Fill It - The Real Secret Of Online Business Success

When I first started out running my own offline business some 25 years ago, one of my early mentors said something interesting to me. He said that doing business was actually very simple - we find a need a fill it!

That was way before the world wide web was around (yes, there was a time before the Internet!).

Business hasn't really changed at all but I would like to rework the phrase slightly for the new era. Business success today might be more accurately defined as "Find a NICHE and fill it"!

Certainly, if you look at many of the really successful online entrepreneurs that is exactly what they have done. They work within quite narrow niche markets and really control them with massive, heavily targeted, marketing campaigns. The problem is finding these niche markets and getting in early enough to be able to secure your stake! The ones who arrive early get the biggest piece of the pie - those that come late to the party are usually left fighting for scraps.

My offline business was teaching self-defence and personal protection courses. I became quite good at it and certainly "filled" that particular need for a great many of my clients. People have a massive need to feel safe and secure and the perception is that levels of crime against individuals seems to be increasing all the time.

I think this perception is accurate too - in spite of what "massaged" government figures might say to the contrary. As we make our businesses, homes, and cars more secure with CCTV and sophisticated alarm systems, criminals have decided that it is much easier to turn their attention on the softest target of all - us!

What can we do to realistically combat this rising tide of crime?

Unfortunately, the world we live in has become unceasingly compartmentalised! Our lives are very complex and we simply cannot be experts in every field! So we are almost forced to give away responsibility for various aspects of our lives to other agencies or individuals - doctors, lawyers, police, government, etc.

The danger is that we give away too much responsibility and assume things which were never meant to be. One area in which this happens is in that of our personal safety and defence of our loved ones. Many assume that it is the responsibility of the police to keep us safe. The police do what they can but they simply cannot be everywhere at every time. They often arrive after an event to try and "solve the crime", but cannot realistically be expected to be there to prevent it.

The simple truth is that we are each responsible for securing our own and our family's personal safety.

This is an uncomfortable thought for some people. They do not feel equipped physically or mentally to combat the perceived threat. In all the years I taught Personal Safety courses my biggest battle was always in getting people to think differently. I spent a large part of my courses challenging my student's thought processes in regard to their safety and encouraging them to replace some of these with a more powerful set of operating principles!

Most people are not warriors - and this is probably just as well - but we do need to take on board some of the qualities of a warrior. Number One amongst these qualities is taking personal responsibility for our own safety.

In real terms this means getting ourselves an education! The key thing about education is that it gives us choices and a methodology for solving problems. This is exactly what we need when we are thinking about Personal Safety. We need to learn to spot problems before they have escalated, and we need to learn a range of responses in order to "solve" the problem, depending on its severity.

And this brings me back to the starting comments of this article "Find A Niche And Fill It". The Family Safety market is such a massive untapped niche that I am amazed that it has not been developed more thoroughly before now. But it hasn't and it is a business that is ready to explode.
