How Google Analytics Works- 3 Important Things To Know

Posted: Feb 10, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

For anyone seeking to build traffic and visits to their site needs to find out how Google Analytics works as quickly as possible. The reason why is that it is probably the most comprehensive, free tool on the Internet for tracking your site's visitors. Not only this, but Google Analytics will allow you to see a large variety of site behaviors such as what keywords were use, what pages were viewed, what traffic sources visitors are coming from, and many others.

But here is the best part. Despite it's rather "MBA" type of heading, Google Analytics is not hard to understand or use. Basically, it's about reading simple numbers and charts. However, if you are a statistician in waiting, all the better. Analytics will give you more data and metrics about your site behavior than you can imagine.

But I'm ahead of myself. First you should know these 3 things before you go ahead with Analytics

Make sure you set up a filter- Once you get signed up, it is important to set up a filter for you selected domain you want to track. This filter should be set up to filter out any visits from your own computer or IP address. Otherwise, your numbers could be very inaccurate, especially when login site development time! Watch Your Keywords- You may be optimizing your site's posts, pages, headings and content for keywords (if you're not, you should be!). However, sometimes, the search engines have people finding you from keywords or keyword combination's you wouldn't expect. Check what keywords people are actually finding you with ( and not what you're optimizing for) and incorporate these into any promotion strategy in the future. In other words, give the search engines what they want. Analytics makes it super easy. Check Your Stats Daily/Use Goals- The power of Analytics is useless if you don't actually log in to view the data. If you are starting out, setting goals is also a worthy objective and Analytics has a whole "goal setting" method that will track your progress.

In conclusion, I hope you now have a little better understanding of how Google Analytics works. The key is to not rush it, take your time, and learn at your own pace. If you need a lot more detail on Google Analytics, keyword research and Internet traffic and site building, click the link below.
