Affiliate marketing is a business relationship established between a merchant and his affiliates. In affiliate marketing, an affiliate agrees to direct some traffic to a merchants website. If that traffic is converted into some kind of action, like a visitor purchasing a product on the merchan's website or a visitor becoming a lead for the company, the affiliate who directed the traffic will be compensated. Compensation may take the form of either a percentage sales commission for the sales generated or a fixed fee predetermined upon the application of the affiliate on the merchant's affiliate program.

There are literally thousands of merchants and retailers offering an affiliate program for you to join. They do this by offering you commissions and sometimes other benefits. There is a downside to this if the merchants use cookies on there sites and do not keep track of your prospects information if they do not not buy first time. Good programs will When the link is clicked, track your clicks and leads and pay you the commission should you get a sale at a later time.
Most programs offering you a chance to become an affiliate will pay you a commission for each sale/lead that you bring in. You should look at what commissions they offer before signing up and if there are any perks, you may find a better offer, so compare where you can.
There are also programs that offer you a fixed rate for a click through or traffic to there site, but these types of programs often give lower payments to you.
A good type of affiliate program is one that offers residual income and they will pay you a sum for each sale from there sites. Sometimes people will ignore residual income because it might not offer a commission as high as a one time commission, but residual income can be better in the long term if you find a good program.
You can make the choice, you can opt for being paid once for each sale from a merchant or building an ongoing residual income from a good solid program and get continual monthly payments.
Residual income is by far the better choice, if you chose a good program you can build on it and earn a nice income.
