The two accepted practices by which web site publishers or owners can earn money are online marketing and advertising. These two services are provided by two online agencies – the advertising agency or network and the affiliate marketing agency or network. In both the cases, the publisher is required to provide the space on his web site for advertising or marketing.
In affiliate marketing, the web site publisher promotes the products of the merchant. Practically, affiliate marketing is more like selling online rather than promoting the business. But, such an activity does take place in affiliate marketing, where in the publishers provides the publicity services.
Online affiliate marketing and online advertising can be seen as running parallel to each other, with many similarities rather than differences. The modus operandi for the two is also somewhat similar. Sometimes they can be found as competing with each other.
In online affiliate marketing, the affiliate program occupies the central role. The affiliate program lay down the set of rules that govern the relationship between the merchant, affiliate and the network. The program highlights the kind of task requirements and the amount of money that would be disbursed for the same. Affiliate program can be the business model for the affiliate network, as the revenue generation is totally dependent on it.
In online affiliate marketing, the web site owner helps in mobilizing the traffic of potential customers from his own web site to the merchants. It is not necessary but that is what happens generally. By placing the content (advertisements, text and links) of merchants on affiliate’s web site, the traffic is directed from affiliate’s site to the merchant’s.
There is a revenue sharing model or compensation model which determines the earnings that are made by affiliate. There is also advertisements serving and tracking programs to help the affiliate with the relevant content and rightful amount of profit money.
Online affiliate marketing has shown a lot of progress in the last five or more years. This marketing method has become very popular in European and North American countries. The best to profit from affiliate marketing are those engaged in online merchandising or web based business. It has served exceptionally well to small business organizations and groups.
